The Dapple Hair Color Pattern

Dapples

Dappling is the description given to any color horse exhibiting circles of a darker color (dark rings) over all of the body.  Seeing dapples on a horse is associated with excellent health and is not seen in horses receiving suboptimal nutrition.  Dapples can appear in most horses when fed a sufficient quantity of high-quality protein and other factors such as grooming.  Gray-colored horses show dapples more at younger ages when their base pigment is still visible, but dapples become less intense or disappear as they age.
