Fence Latches

From simple to complicated, I have seen a wide variety of fence gate latches.  I separate them into two types: operated with one or two hands.  I prefer the one-handed gate latch.

Here I have a simple way to turn a two-handed chain into a one-handed chain.  So simple and inexpensive; it’s crazy.  Enjoy!

1 of 3 – This is the opened chain latch for the gate. A screw eye is placed through a chain link so the chain never falls to the ground.
2 of 3 – This is the chain latch for the gate. I use my free hand to bring the free end up to the screw eye to close the chain latch.
3 of 3 – This is the chain latch for the gate. This is the most simple one handed operation of a gate latch ever devised.
The latch is a sliding piece of board with a security chain. A water pipe comes from the ground for the water tank.
A gate for horses and a gate for humans may be redundant. The hinge hooks are set correctly so the gate can’t come off. The latches allow for the gate to swing either way and close automatically. There are 2 brass tack hooks for hanging halters and leads.
A screw eye makes this gate a simple one handed operation.
This is a mandatory two hand operation that could be made into a one hand operation with the placement of a screw eye as seen in other photos.
A simple one handed latch but may not be effective to keep horses from opening it.
