Eye Issues - No Known Cause or Remedy
Hi Chaela – my heart goes out to this pony!
Laminitis and fat pads would be the primary concern as this represents Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). Add to this depression and “swollen eye lids” and you have some added parts to this.
My question is this – how does a pony get EMS if all she eats is forage? The answer is in this. Remember that…

I am discovering (due to an increased number of people writing me comments) that there might be some changes to the forage (both pasture and baled) that stimulate changes in gut bacteria. It is looking to be seasonal.
Just when things looked rather straight forward, curve balls are thrown causing us to re-think our programs. So I agree that…

My hemp “experiment” fizzled. Tried it for 2 months. Meh. Too expensive. The hype didn’t play out. Didn’t seem to have any influence on Remy’s occasional crankiness (I presumed some kind of inflammation) which has increased, and he’s usually pretty happy in the summers. He also started to look a little bloated and had one episode of…

Eye Issues - No Known Cause or Remedy
Today I started doing “energy work” on, Dolly, an Amish pony. Dolly’s got laminitis, fat pads everywhere, depressed, both eyes are swollen shut. She swayed side to side the entire time I worked with her. I know she liked the touch and got some releases/relaxation out of the treatment. More bend in the forelegs after I was done and… Read more

Nutrition & Metabolism- Soaking Hay
Soaking hay is a diffusion process that has a maximum effect followed by a lesser effect. In other words, there is an amount of time where a large percentage of starch is removed and after which, the effect of soaking diminishes the removal of starch. Think of charging your phone with an almost dead battery. It rapidly fills quickly and then… Read more

Thanks Kathy for your encouraging observation for Emily based on your experience.
I agree that “food aggression” is a common observation that the mitochondria are running solely on glucose while the improvement in this behavior indicates mitochondria flexibility is occurring. The new source for fat as fuel is the body fat.
It is helpful to… Read more

Nutrition & Metabolism- Soaking Hay
Are we concerned about mold growth if soaking hay for several hours or more, or is there a best set of practices to maintain sanitation? I’ve heard mention on the podcast of the guy who’s soaking a bale overnight.
Obviously, the early morning feeding is the most problematic because I’d rather not get up at 3am to soak the hay. 😃
I’ve been… Read more

Glad you are seeing improvements already. The contentment and lack of meal-time anxiety is a common improvement observed on this diet. Your horses are right on schedule!

We are on the 5th day of trading ration balancer for soy bean meal, soaking our hay, and implementing a longer period at night without food in front of the horses. We have five of them who all live together, four of which are mustangs who’ve struggled to loose fat (I take responsibility for making them fat to begin with). Tonight when I… Read more
