Hi Doc T and who ever would like to give me their thoughts. My horse Niobe has come down with laminitis she is 17 years of age, she has been on Soybean meal for the last 5 years and only Alfalfa and let out to pasture. Niobe is not over weight I have tried grass hay at different times and she has diarrhea. One of my questions is Can I soak…
1 Comment-
Soybean meal should not cause the problem nor should alfalfa be an issue as it is ok for limonitic horses. The questions I would have is about the richness in pasture. The diarrhea would make me think dysbiosis, gut upset cause by what Niobe is eating. Just because her weight is good that does not mean she is not metabolic.
Not advice, just my thoughts

[[Invite]] Sleep Hygiene In Horses – June 19th, 2025
Sleep occurs in every animal that researchers have studied, including birds, fish, aquatic mammals, and insects. Between 50 and 60 years ago, research was published on sleep in horses. Nothing was mentioned when I attended veterinary school from 1980 to 1984, with the exception of horses falling down, sound asleep during World War One (1914… Read more

Introduction of Me and My Horses
Thanks I look forward to the beta testing.
My local vet in CA, Ron Lenhert of Apple Valley Equine, instructed me to provide Bermuda grass hay at 2% BW and 1 qt size coffee can of SBM daily. At the time, I was struggling what to feed due to the number of choices available. Later I found your website confirming his instructions. I always wonder… Read more

Introduction of Me and My Horses
Thank you, Lynn. Our path with horses has been remarkably similar: we started with horses in 1973, lost horses to EMS and laminitis, and so on. It’s funny, but we both have done what “they” told us to do. This path included other horse owners and slick marketing, but for me, veterinary school and their continuing education.
You found me when… Read more

Introduction of Me and My Horses
Hello
I’ve been with horses since early 1970’s. Currently, I have two horses, Oniek (pronounced like Onique similar to Unique) who is a 6-year old Warmblood gelding and Rei (pronounced like Ray) who is a 4-year old Lusitano gelding. I joined the membership to learn about NUTRITION that is protein-centered. I found Doc T in 2010 or so… Read more

This week’s Rounds With Doc T covers 3 essential aspects of physics as it applied to horses remaining sound or becoming lame:
- Force – mass times acceleration
- Piezoelectric currents
- Vector analysis on the distribution of weight on the hooves and joints.
There may be a lot more to keeping horses sound. Still, a critical… Read more

This Rounds was supposed to be about soundness – or lameness – in our horses. Instead, I was asked about propionate, a volatile fatty acid, which are the short-chain fatty acids made by the hindgut bacteria. It is used as a mold inhibitor in breads and in baled forage. After this, I briefly discussed end-stage teeth in horses, and then a… Read more

This was great! Very interesting. We are having a storm, lost power, dropped the call. Since it is after 9, I won’t try to connect again. Thanks so much!

Thank you for joining me last night. I’m sorry that I missed this comment. I was working and then preparing for the Rounds. The new platform will have notifications, so I will be notified on my phone when comments like this are added. COMING SOON!

- 0:01:04 – I cover the difference between laminitis and founder and the rotation of the coffin bone.
- 0:06:05 – I am often asked to age a horse using their teeth because I see so many horses’ teeth. It makes sense. Not all horses have papers, lip tattoos, or computer chips embedded under the skin. Can the teeth give an accurate age,…

In my experience, pain tells me something is wrong with my horse. The big question is…what is wrong? Figuring out the cause, or in many cases, the causes, can be very difficult, somethings many things cause you to explore many different ideas. It can be a very long journey.
I wrote an article for Morgan Horse Magazine about pain often… Read more

I just heard a fascinating discussion about pain (in humans) by someone who has made his life helping those who have difficulty controlling their pain. It went to places I had never thought of. However, I realized that it is part of what I use daily as I float teeth in worried horses with oral pain.
We covered the FEI announcement about… Read more

I have been trying to watch the replay of the last two Rounds. No luck. Please advise. Thanks.

Lancette, I’m sorry but I am just seeing this now. Were you able to find the replays? We have been working to get The Horse’s Advocate moved to a better platform where we can get and send notifications in a more timely manner and is much less cumbersome and more user friendly. We should be launching that the first of May. LMK if you still need…
