Thanks much. I told my vet I wouldn’t put him on Purina’s Low Starch grain per her suggestion to work up to 3 lbs per day. He had been on no grain!
I’m so glad I took your nutrition class in the past. My problem has been too much hay and minimal exercise for him because of my health. He looked better than last year but he just didn’t seem to… Read more

Thanks for your response Doc. I am soaking all of his hay and only giving 20lbs per day, slow feeder. I have started some SBM with him as my vet has prescribed short term metformin for him; that’s the only way I can get him to take it.

These are 2 different foods. SBM will deliver better protein to help with muscle loss and hormone improvement. However all protein when fed with a sugar intake in excess of daily needs can be turned into sugar which will exacerbate IR.
First reduce the sugar. Restrict the eating time. As you start to see loss of body fat, add in the SBM.

I agree that adding any grains with starch (even “low starch”) will negatively affect the release of insulin. Reducing sugar and starch intake is critical for improving insulin sensitivity.
Soaking hay for an hour will help remove most of the free sugars. Reduce by the total amount of hay will decrease the starch. Limiting eating hay to a 12… Read more

Isn’t soybean meal a better choice for an insulin resistant horse instead of the vet recommendation for a low starch grain.

Hello Doc, my horse was recently diagnosed positively for IR. He had been on the soybean meal but pretty much went off and switched to mainly forage with some vitamin/mineral pellets. My vet wants me to put him on Purina WellSolve LS grain, yikes, metformin and a product called Insulin-wise.( which looks like amino acids and resveratrol). I… Read more

Thank you Kathy
And very specifically to Doc T-thanks for the info on flabby cheeks-really appreciate that and of course SBM-my horses are so much happier. All of the brain stuff he talked about the other day works much better with the right fuel. I am very optimistic to take this information forward in the care of my horses!

@Doc-t , when is the next “ask Doc anything”? Question re your thoughts on Mg oxide vs Mg malate (re Mg supplementation for PSSM2). Friend in human medicine mentioned Mg malate as more bioavailable than Mg oxide. Used for patients with fibromyalgia.
-
The next AMA is March 14th. I am not sure I have the answer to which Mg is more bioavailable. I will need to look at this. The research on PSSM is evolving and seems to be gaining traction as a popular subject though the number of horses affected by this overtly may be few relative to other diseases such as colic, laminitis, EMS, etc. But I… Read more
