SBM available from Southern States
Our SBM here in south FL is shipped in to our feed dealer (all farm animals) from Sandusky OH. There is never any foreign material in it and it sells for $18 / 50 pound bag.
As with everything, quality is an “inside job” and you need to ask your feed dealer to find a different source of SBM. They may have to charge a bit more to receive… Read more

Obesity isn’t about calories eaten vs calories burned
Thanks @Kathy for this. Gary Taubes wrote the book “Good Calories, Bad Calories” and is well worth the time to read. 26 hours on audio! His discovery that weight regulation is a hormonal issue and not a calorie issue is a thesis of mine here at The Horse’s Advocate. I am SO GLAD you found this article and shared it with us.
It is the… Read more

SBM available from Southern States
I sometimes use a smaller screen with a really messy bag but it takes forever to sift. The 1/4 gets most corn and pellets and is quick and easy and is what I use 95% of the time.

Obesity isn’t about calories eaten vs calories burned
A very good read that IME applies to horses as well as to people. It’s not an imbalance of calories in vs. calories expended (I.e. exercise). It’s about what is eaten rather than how much:
“Diets that can successfully resolve obesity are not those that induce us to eat less, per energy-balance thinking, but those that reduce circulating… Read more

SBM available from Southern States
I’ve found a large variety of things in my SBM from various sources. I’ve taken to screening all SBM before feeding to my horses. I found some nifty gold-miners screens on Amazon that fit on a five-gallon bucket.
SE Patented Stackable 13-1/4″ Sifting Pan, 1/4″ Mesh Screen – GP2-14…

Maybe a testimonial, maybe an anecdote...
@JulianneR I often ask horse owners to not tell their farriers / trimmers of the diet change and then wait for them to volunteer unbiased comments like this.
It usually takes about 2 to 4 months to “suddenly” see the new hoof wall growth from the coronary band (more vertical hoof walls). However, the sole is a different story. It is maybe ½…

I am continuously fascinated by the diversity of responses between individual horses. I listen to human podcasts looking for evidence or techniques to understand this more but in humans, they are also stumped. The testing measurements which seem logical to perform are not available or too expensive to use in humans, let alone horses. Looking…
