Should Your Horse Be Turned Out On Green Grass? Horse Talk Episode #5
Thank you for confirming the purpose of this site – to educate to the point where we can teach others! You made my day!
The gut microbiomes are very different between horses. Adjusting the food to develop the gut microbes that make each horse healthy is exactly what is needed. For some it is no adjustment and for others it is soaking…

Look for reservoirs of starch. Insulin appears when starch is ingested. The amount of starch in hay is often overlooked especially when it is added to the starch of the grass in the pasture. Limiting this through soaking the hay and limiting the intake will reduce insulin – just like living through winter.

Should Your Horse Be Turned Out On Green Grass? Horse Talk Episode #5
Thank you for your reply. I think I understand more than I realized as, just this morning, I was explaining all this to my neighbor who is having a vague lameness issues with her Arabian. I was amazed that I could discuss these ideas clearly. My main area of confusion is still pasture turnout, time of day and how much. But, that may be one…

Bingo! Yes, suspected of IR although we haven’t tested yet. Blood work has been done but not the specific test for IR. He is grain free (several years now) on SBM and reduced access to pasture. I’ve also increased his exercise as you have recommended in previous posts. I’ll mention the IR/corneal ulcer connection to my vet. I have a feeling she…

Should Your Horse Be Turned Out On Green Grass? Horse Talk Episode #5
It seems complex @Sandy_K but it isn’t. For me to learn this I have replayed a lot of podcasts and books. This month’s webinar is my attempt to break down these mechanics into small parts to better understand the overall issue of glucose disposal, insulin, resistance, and EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome).
As far as the sugar content of grass,…

@Sandy_K Previcox is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which was shown by the Texas A&M vet school to eliminate a family of microbes that normally populate the mouth of horses – after only 1 dose. HOWEVER, this must be balanced against why it is needed to be used. Many horses have been on long term NSAID’s without a gut issue.…

Should Your Horse Be Turned Out On Green Grass? Horse Talk Episode #5
Wow! That was a brain full of info. I have to admit, I hit the replay button several times. So, let me see if I got this right, turn horse out on pasture when sugar content is lowest (night, after dusk to mid morning???) Reduce or eliminate all sources of sugar, increase exercise. Oh, and increase quality protein. Did I understand it correctly?…

Rounds With Doc T - "The Ins and Outs of Fat" - 2021 April 26th
It was great to have everyone join us that could make it to the live meeting of “The Ins And Outs Of Fat.”
The movement of fat in the form of Free Fatty Acids (FFA’s) and triglycerides (TAG’s) throughout the body passes in and out of the body fat cell freely in a normal and healthy horse. I describe this arrangement and how a continuous supply… Read more

I have been listening to a very interesting, 25 hour long book about the history of human nutritional research as I drive. The bad news take-away is that egos, the news media and poor technology all combined to deliver confusing, conflicting and ever changing information of what we were supposed to eat to remain healthy. Yet today heart…
