Ah, an update–of course!
Recap: a variant of PSSM-2 is/was suspected. Added Vitamin E and Magnesium Oxide per vet’s basic recommendation. Rem gets 7 grams of natural Vitamin E and 29 grams of magnesium oxide. Made no other dietary changes. He has improved. Oh – I originally had his Vitamin E checked last fall. The vet tested in-house. I was…

Hello everyone! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep mares more comfortable while in heat?
This post probably seems silly to some of you but this is the first mare I’ve owned and I’m not quite sure what to think! My mare is so grumpy and difficult to work with right now and it makes me sad seeing her so unhappy! She’s extremely…

Hi there, I can’t answer your question but as for me, I feed soaked alfalfa cubes because I believe the cubes provide more roughage than the pellets do. I also sprinkle the SBM on top of it. She really likes it, and seems to be very satisfied. I also of course feed grass hay but I soak that as well to lower the sugar content🤠

Doc T,
Is feeding alfalfa hay pellets just as good for the horse as feeding alfalfa hay?

Pictured here I am in the process of floating the upper and lower 6’s (molars/cheek teeth). This horse has a common condition called “Flabby Cheeks.” This is excessive fat tissue that sits on the bars in the mouth where the bit sits. When ridden, a large diameter bit can displace this tissue over the bottom premolars and pinch the…

@Rosie This might make a good discussion to post in the forum “Horse Care Discussions.” It would become searchable for those in the future to look for subjects like “bit problems” “bit seats” and others (hint – include these words in your post). Thanks for considering this and thanks for posting this in the activity feed. Some day when there… Read more

haha😆 The gators usually leave us alone!
Jinks was the Percheron, he was a lot of fun. He was my demonstration horse at The Mane Event in Canada. I had the chance to talk to and show hundreds of people that floating without medication was possible. Jinks was a “Big” head turner.

Hi Kerry – Please listen to episode #3 in the podcasts. I also recorded a webinar on this back in 2016 which can be found here: https://www.thehorsesadvocate.com/pituitary-dysfunction-what-is-cushings-disease-in-horses/
Of interest, the release of dopamine has been shown to be affected by insulin resistance. Hmmm – it all keeps coming back to that!

Rounds With Doc T - "Ins And Outs Of Fat - An Addendum To The April Rounds"
Micronized linseed is a seed oil made to add Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids and protein to human diets and now, to horses. There is little science behind it as far as gut inflammation but I would assume that like with all seed oils, it is a polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) and therefore inflammatory.
We also need to define the term “weight.” Our eyes…

Howdy Taylor! Great to see you here!
I know getting the hand inside a big horse like that is scary, but for me, getting in a river with gators might be my limit!! LOL – Doc T

Help Please,
I have been diligently feeding no grains no sugars only good Timothy hay some alfalfa cubes for treat SBM mixed with Tim/Alf pellets and this has been going on since 11/20 I still have two girthy horses, bite at me every time I saddle, overall not happier I thought so at first but they have slipped back to being content to just be…

Hi Jilly,
Back in Sept ’20 I had a similar issue. My Lustiano was on restricted hay ration and attacked every haynet as if starving. I was advised that if I fed him ad lib hay that was below 10% water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) he would self regulate in 3 weeks max. After 8 weeks he looked like he was carrying twins and was aggressive… Read more
