The “grumpy mare syndrome” can be difficult. The first thing to determine is if it is truly an hormonal condition. This can be done by getting 10 days worth of Regumate from your vet and giving it (without spilling any because the dose is measured to the weight of the horse. Spilling = not giving the right dose). If the unwanted signs go away…

I am not prepared to open discussions with these authors because I don’t have the time or personnel. At some point I will be able to hire a team of researchers to help me prepare to discuss things with others because I would need to further understand their work. But until I am retired and do this full time I will not on a routine basis reach…

Howdy everyone! I’ve been really busy with floating teeth or setting up my new computer storage device (NAS). Remember I’m also a geek!
The God of fairness shined favorably on me yesterday. I washed both my Tesla key fob and my Apple air pods (as well as laundered money). I had gone to absent minded mode after floating horses in 90 degree…

Doc-t replied to the discussion Alfalfa Hay VS Pellets? in the forum No Grain Challenge 4 years ago
In human nutrition, processing has been associated with increased uptake in carbohydrates due to the faster transit times. While everyone is looking at “roughage,” processing the alfalfa shouldn’t affect the composition of starch and cellulose but it will affect the transit time. This is why in humans eating starch from vegetables has a…

Here’s my question (posed to my vet but she hasn’t answered me yet): if blood levels are “perfectly normal” WITH supplementation, does that mean he definitely needed it? If I cease giving it will his levels drop? Did the negative result in the fecal sample play a role in his comfort? Is it just that he has the freedom to move whenever he…

Kathy,
Thank you for your response to my question. I also prefer hay but I have several friends who have their horses on the no grain diet who feed pellets in place of alfalfa. From my past experience, I believe hay is better than pellets. I would love to hear what Doc T thinks about this? Is there a big difference between feeding hay…

Renie,
Thank you for your response. I agree, the difference is in the roughage. It does seem like horses need the roughage that actual hay or hay cubes provide. For years I fed a Bermuda/Alfalfa fortified pellets. My horses did not thrive like they are now. One of them had severe ulcers. Is the difference between now and then just due to…

I am SO happy to hear that Remi is feeling so much better!! I look forward to reading any comments Doc T has to your questions. I hope you’ve cracked the code for this horse.

I personally prefer the hay form because it’s less processed than pellets or cubes but nutritionally I think it’s pretty similar by weight other than the fiber length.

Dr T, I’m curious if you have the opportunity to discuss articles, like the one on endocrinology, with the authors in a sort of round table conversation. If so, has the exchange of ideas sparked subsequent research or thought?

Connecting people to horses, especially “at-risk youth” is a benefit all of us here understand. We use horsemanship here in my dentistry practice and understand how much the horses like it when leadership, connection and listening is used. As I teach horse owners the difference between cheerleading and coaching, the immediate recognition from… Read more
