Rounds With Doc T - "Fat And Physics - 2 Reasons For Soft Tissue Injuries In Horses" - 2021 May 31st
Maybe I should call it Phat and Physics – or Fat and Fysics?? This will be a mix of some interesting ideas that started when I saw an “epidemic” of suspensory injuries over the past decade. I try to answer why they have become so prevalent when suspensory injuries were only found in one branch of the suspensory in racing Thoroughbreds back in the 1980’s.

I know Doc T recommends salt blocks- or white salt (eg plain NaCL)-is that correct? he also said don’t use salt that has sugar as a binder-but I never knew that was done. Is it on the labels? PS my horse starts SBM tomorrow.

Doc T recommends either Redmon Rock or Himalayan. I have used both. Just hang from the rope in their stall.

The red trace mineral salt licks have corn syrup and molasses so I do not recommend them. There was a horse with soft manure that resolved when this block was removed. The white blocks have a binder (unknown to me) that holds it together.

Rounds With Doc T - "Fat And Physics - 2 Reasons For Soft Tissue Injuries In Horses" - 2021 May 31st
It was great to have everyone join us that could make it to the live meeting – “Fat and physics – 2 causes for soft tissue injuries in horses.”
There is an increase in soft tissue injuries in horses (ligaments and tendons). This seminar discusses the role of fat in two ways. The first is fat’s role in inflammation and resorption of proteins… Read more

KarenM started the discussion Coughing in the forum Systems And Diseases 4 years ago
Is there any association with coughing and clover consumption? The Bermuda grass pasture is coming on but there’s a fair amount of white clover out there. Remy hasn’t exhibited any drooling (one of his pasturemates has) but he has developed an intermittent cough the last 2-3 weeks, enough so that I wondered if the cough could be related to…

What I really want is a simple list of ingredients...
I received this request from someone: “What I really want right now is a simple list of the actual foods I should use in what amounts, without any explanations.”
Here is my response:
I really am trying to make this website easy for everyone to find the information they are looking for while providing the in depth reasons behind this information.…

To all members - I need some feedback as soon as you can
I just saw a case of non-healing scratches in a 30 year old who also has DSLD of the front limbs (where the fetlock drops to the ground), top line muscle loss, EOTRH (losing the incisor teeth) and Cushing’s disease. He is being fed grain and no soybean meal.
I also saw another 30 year old this week who had equine sleep disorder (“narcolepsy”)…

So I have done the deworming protocol and ran two fecal checks which both came clear. Still have some scratches showing up. Thoughts?

Last night I attended another AAEP Round Table discussion – “Equine Pain Management: Hospital Patient vs Performance Horse.” The 2 speakers were very informed as both were trained anesthesiologists. One works at Colorado State vet school and the other lives in KY and works the show circuit in CA and MI.
What I found most interesting was the…

From experience working in a small animal clinic I see Trazadone being prescribed mainly to dogs with seperation anxiety. Unfortunately it is deemed ineffective by owners. I personally like CBD oil for small animals and advocate for a specific product that I have seen work.

Why Horse Owners Need To Understand The Parachute Study - Podcast #009 ( Moved to community.thehorsesadvocate.com )“Understanding Horse Science” – This was a parody published in a top medical journal to bring attention to the fact that there are few research papers published that we can believe. Doc-t replied to the discussion Adding Coolstance. Oops in the forum No Grain Challenge 4 years ago
The first question I want to ask is why add cool stance? The next question I have is why do you think the protein is the cause of him becoming a rocket? My final question is if he is a rocket, is he feeling good or better than before?
In humans, about 15% of metabolic energy comes from the conversion of protein into glucose (gluconeogenesis in…

Hello Doc T. I am happily trying the no-grain challenge and doing everything in two week increments…..so far so good with horse behavior but then I added about 100 grams of cool stance which is 20 grams of more protein to my alfalfa pellet and soy bean meal (200grams per day each) – now I have a rocket on my hands – I think I need to pare… Read more

Thank you for the response Doc and sorry for the late reply!
I’m planning on having my vet out for spring shots so I will talk to him about her behavior and possible causes as well.
The only grain she’s had since I got her(last July) is in the treats my grandpa gives her. I think he gives her one quarter sized treat every 2 or 3 days or whenever…

I’m listening to a podcast on soft tissue injuries with someone I know being interviewed – Dr Lisa Fortier of Cornell. She and another vet are discussing diagnostics and therapies. They are getting deep into stem cell therapy right now but I’m on a break – to be continued tomorrow.
I can’t help to notice that when when I listen to podcasts of…

UPDATE!
This morning I’m listening to the 2nd half and I was so grateful to Dr Fortier when she and then her colleague brought up obesity, endocriopathies and EMS (equine metabolic syndrome) and their association with increased soft tissue injuries. “Overfed and undernourished” is a primary ingredient in getting soft tissue injuries (tendons… Read more
