Thanks @JulianneR and @KarenM – here is a long answer.
The hoof is mostly protein and with chronic protein deficiency, I would think the farriers, trimmers and veterinarians would be focusing on amino acid replacement rather than discuss minerals where there is no outward evidence of a mineral deficiency. The concern about minerals has come…

Hi KarenM — thank you so much for your response! At our current barn, the horses have access to a plain, white salt block, because the barn owner believes that mineral salts have too much iron (hence the reason for my post). If I understand correctly, the recommended salt block is the Redmond or Himalayan, not the reddish ones from the…

Hi Julianne,
No doubt Dr Tucker will weigh in with his expertise, but in the meantime… Do you mean those reddish blocks sold at feed stores? Those aren’t good in part because of the binders in them. I’d avoid them. Somewhere in the materials on this site Dr Tucker talks about salt and mineral blocks.
It’s my understanding that a horse would…

Hi Lei,
My horse has battled scratches this year for the first time. We moved in late winter to a farm that has some wet areas and a good amount of grass in the pasture so it’s tough to keep his lower legs dry. I also have used the Coat Defense products and found the powder very effective at keeping things at bay. I think the clay is way…

I’m new here and am still learning the ropes. In my current horse management situation, the horses are provided a plain salt block in their pasture. The farm owner (who is also a barefoot trimmer) cautions against the mined mineral salt blocks because of the iron content, which she says can interfere with the absorption of other minerals (zinc…

SBM available from Southern States
Hi all — I live in East TN and called my local Southern States Coop just over the state line in VA, and they carry SBM in 50-lb bags for $17-ish. I just need to call ahead to make sure they have some on the floor when I get there. I also found a mill in CA that sells organic, non-GMO SBM for around $65 — plus $65 shipping! Probably going to…

So I haven’t been here in a while. I wanted to share what has worked for me over the past few months. I took my mare off the SBM and replaced that with Kelp. I started covering her legs with a combination of Coat Defense paste on the actual areas that were active, and cheaper poultice over the entire leg apparatus. Whenever I see an active…

If I have understood correctly, there is a discount code for members on swag purchases. Where can I find it? Thank you.

Does good nutrition equal a shiny coat?
I see a lot of horses with poor hair coats and almost all of them have a poor diet. Then I see a lot of horses with a “shiny” hair coat who are also on a poor diet. It is confusing. I then hear all the “remedies” people use to improve the hair coat including a lot of rubbing (no diet supplements). More confusion.
One of the first thing seen in…

Does good nutrition equal a shiny coat?
I’ve seen on Facebook recently, horse owners asking how to get a shiny coat on their horse. Many people have responded with coconut oil or chia/flaxseed. Some say forage is key. What if your horse is getting all of the necessary nutrients and minerals, but doesn’t have a shiny coat? Does that mean they aren’t healthy? I’m not sure why…

Welcome @JulianneR I love this quote from you: “My goal as a horse owner is to keep learning all I can to keep him healthy, sound, and happy into his golden years!” This is exactly the reason for this website and my goal as well. My job is to cut through the misinformation and then translate what is good for your horse in a way we all…
