I am continuously fascinated by the diversity of responses between individual horses. I listen to human podcasts looking for evidence or techniques to understand this more but in humans, they are also stumped. The testing measurements which seem logical to perform are not available or too expensive to use in humans, let alone horses. Looking…

Well, my naturalpath and myofascial release practitioner that works on her recommended that due the the fact we had not been able to clear inflammation. If you recall I did the recommended wormer and tested for worms twice which was zero both before and after I did the worm protocol. The removal of the SBM and replacement with kelp has seemed…

A great new option for eye protection
Thanks @SandraC – I saw this at your farm and was really impressed with the construction and, more importantly, your mare’s willingness to wear it. The mask stays away from the face and eye and the amount of air flow prevents the accumulation of sweat. I also liked the way the fly mask fits perfectly over this device preventing flies…

An “end stage tooth” extracted in a senior horse (>26 years old). Teeth erupt continuously throughout life and at some point, in some horses, the tooth just comes out of the socket. In this case the tooth was stuck between two other teeth and needed some gentle persuasion to come out.

A great new option for eye protection
If you’re like me you’re constantly searching for a fly mask that actually protects the eyes instead of just covering them up. I finally found something that is the best thing I’ve ever used. We’ve been treating our 17 year old large pony for a corneal ulcer that emerged in literally one day back in mid June. She’d been rubbing the eye…

SBM available from Southern States
Hi SandraC — thanks for that info! For this bag, I think I can manage with screening, but I will call this issue to the attention of the people at my Southern States. Interestingly, there is a new person in charge of the inventory there, and she was very helpful and asked my what my needs were so she could keep the right things in stock. That’s…

Podcast comment on "Houston..."
Thanks @KarenM for this perspective. I probably would not have revived this subject because of its painfulness for many horse owners, but then the email came from the AAEP.
It is interesting the differences in the generations. I am reading a book on how the brain works and I am starting the chapter discussing the generations of the last century…

Podcast comment on "Houston..."
Sorry, couldn’t find a designated general spot to comment on podcasts, so I’ll leave it here.
The idea that there are fewer vets coming out of universities is an eye opener, not to mention frightening. I get it but the statistics are startling. (As a side bar to the quality of new vets, one hopes they will quickly advance in their skills, and…

SBM available from Southern States
My farmers exchange sells SBM and was/is a Southern States/ProElite dealer. I ran into the same “pellet of unknown origin” in our bags about 8 months ago. Not just a few were in there, but a lot were in there. I returned the entire bag and said I’d like to know what that was. They had no idea but contacted the mill to find out what was…

SBM available from Southern States
I picked up a 50 lb bag last week. It was in a plain bag with no label. There is the occasional pellet-looking piece of material mixed in, but looks otherwise clean.

SBM available from Southern States
Southern States SBM is abundant and has been discussed a lot in the FB group. It is produced by Cargill which is the parent company of Nutrena. They have the warning not to feed this as the exclusive feed to horses but our group investigators found that it is the same SBM as in their horse feeds. They just don’t want the horse owners to stop…

Why take her off of a high quality protein source and replace it with kelp? Please explain. And also remember that goiter is common in horses fed kelp as an iodine source.
I also want to apologize for never writing about scratches. To me, scratches are a reflection of a horse with a high degree of body inflammation. I seem to be able to…

Thanks for weighing in, Doc T. So my bottom line is: feed high-quality protein + forage and a mined mineral salt block!
