Mission Statement - Podcast #066 ( Moved to community.thehorsesadvocate.com )“Surviving Or Thriving?” – Horses thriving is open to interpretation, but as we look at our horses, we all see the difference between thriving and existing. We see this in ourselves. Thriving is a goal we…

Accepting Fat Horses - Podcast #064 ( Moved to community.thehorsesadvocate.com )“Is It OK If My Horse Is Fat?” – As long as there isn’t an ice age, the thin horse will survive and thrive longer than the fat horse because the downside of excess body fat is the propensity for unsoundness and…

Rounds With Doc T - Ask Doc T Anything - 2022 August 8th
With the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sales starting today, I thought about young horse development (some of them are HUGE) and I’m curious. Do most of these well bred yearlings start out with decent mouth conformation? In your experience, are the majority of these young horses free from any sort of dental concerns (like conformation issues), and… Read more

Remy wants to know if you have recommendations for reliable rechargeable fans. I can’t make up my mind and he thinks the cheap one I bought smells.
**cribbing collar is a barn owner request. He pulled boards down. He gets regular breaks from it.

Thank you for having your horse on a non-inflammatory diet, plus added protein. This diet will help your colt throughout his life.
Soft tissue injury occurs as acute trauma (a direct blow) or a chronic injury from overuse (common in working horses such as racehorses). If from trauma, the injury usually heals quickly, and the diet he is on… Read more

Hi Doc T,
Our 3-year-old colt has what our vet believes to be a soft tissue injury and our protocol is to rest him for 6 weeks with hand-walking and rehab exercises over poles, mostly to keep him moving and keep his mind busy during this time. Then we’ll reassess. He’s about 950 lbs and gets 1lb SBM daily + soaked alfalfa and grass hay at… Read more

Reducing side-bone in hoofs naturally
Thank you. This has been helpful! I’m currently looking into a solution for better supportive shoeing and have been very careful with her workload and diet. She hasn’t been ridden since the fracture but I keep her moving with hand walking and light ground work. I’ve already planned on giving her a year off so we’ll see how things go. 🙂

Reducing side-bone in hoofs naturally
I am not aware of any treatments for sidebone fractures other than surgery. Surgery may not help, either. Bones need about four months to heal, provided the fractured pieces are immobilized. However, there is a lot of movement in the hoof.
One thing to remember is that “sidebone” is the ossification of the lateral cartilage. What triggers… Read more

Hello. I’m writing about our 36 year old Fjord mare, Stine (born in Norway, flew here as a 2 yr old in an operation called the “Big Lift” in 1988). She and her pasture/paddock mate, Lucky (age 38) have been on the no-grain diet for 2 years.
Lately, Stine has not been finishing her alf/tim cube mash. She loves her SBM but she is losing…

When a horse is older than 30 and is starting to lose body weight, many things are occurring that may be more than nutrition. Because of this, I believe in offering any senior horse any food necessary to keep them going. With this said, senior horses fed inflammatory foods show mild inflammation, such as a stiff gait or decreased movement in… Read more

Reducing side-bone in hoofs naturally
Thank you for your reply and insight! My horse has experienced a fracture in her front left due to significant side bone, and she has been in recovery for about 4 months now. She is currently sound but the foot remains metabolically active so I have just been hand-walking her and following your no-grain diet to reduce inflammation. I’ve also… Read more
