Coprophagy! The eating of one’s own manure! One of the 5 smells people working in the mouth of horses know well! We come across this every once in a while and it is usually a surprise to the owner.

I have never known coprophagy to be a mineral deficiency. I have never seen any studies to support this. I believe, however, that it is a way… Read more

@Emily I have seen this in Wellington FL but not used much on the farms I visit. The company contacted me a few years ago and their marketing director came to my house to show me the details. You can see the images of the example on this website in examples of hay but it looks just like what you posted here: … Read more

@Emily @KarenM I like this concept of the 55 gal drum to hold a longer supply of hay yet “drip” it through a net below over the day. This should also solve the problem of the cribbing collar as he keeps the head lower to eat but the top is high and covered.

Another thought is that this tub above the net could hold a measured hay supply for… Read more

        “Question:

Thank you for your reply.  I asked this question as my mare has had a mild recent tying up episode.  I have her Vit e and Se levels checked every 6 mos  which have always been normal.  She eats well and drinks during training as well as after.  Just wondering if maybe I need to add in a BCAA electrolyte on training days or during training?… Read more

Reply to Diet while on ulcer care

I apologize for missing this discussion!

Ulcers are caused by a disruption in the normal microbe population anywhere in the gut (mouth to anus). This is called a “dysbiosis.” Getting a horse restored to the normal microflora of the gut is the principle behind curing and preventing further ulcerations. Any treatment from FDA approved… Read more

I enjoyed our phone call yesterday. You noted that the BCS was misrepresented here and should have been a 3 to 4.

The first question we did not discuss was why do you think he started to lose weight 3 years ago when before that he was an “easy keeper?” While a worse case scenario would include a disease, a more likely cause could be the… Read more
