Pictured here I am in the process of floating the upper and lower 6’s (molars/cheek teeth). This horse has a common condition called “Flabby Cheeks.” This is excessive fat tissue that sits on the bars in the mouth where the bit sits. When ridden, a large diameter bit can displace this tissue over the bottom premolars and pinch the…

@Rosie This might make a good discussion to post in the forum “Horse Care Discussions.” It would become searchable for those in the future to look for subjects like “bit problems” “bit seats” and others (hint – include these words in your post). Thanks for considering this and thanks for posting this in the activity feed. Some day when there… Read more

Hi Kerry – Please listen to episode #3 in the podcasts. I also recorded a webinar on this back in 2016 which can be found here: https://www.thehorsesadvocate.com/pituitary-dysfunction-what-is-cushings-disease-in-horses/
Of interest, the release of dopamine has been shown to be affected by insulin resistance. Hmmm – it all keeps coming back to that!

Micronized linseed is a seed oil made to add Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids and protein to human diets and now, to horses. There is little science behind it as far as gut inflammation but I would assume that like with all seed oils, it is a polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) and therefore inflammatory.
We also need to define the term “weight.” Our eyes…

Howdy Taylor! Great to see you here!
I know getting the hand inside a big horse like that is scary, but for me, getting in a river with gators might be my limit!! LOL – Doc T

This might be a fantastic idea. The starch content of oat straw is lower and the lignin content higher. Therefore the horses won’t like it as much. In addition, the manure becomes more yellow than brown. When I exercised polo ponies back in the 70’s in Calif that is all they fed the horses.
Here are 2 images. The 1st is for oat straw (4%…

Have you ever had someone ask this about not feeding grain to their horses: “But how will he get the energy he needs to work?” I will answer this in tonight’s webinar – “The Ins And Outs Of Fat.” See y’all there (or maybe on the replay). Doc T

Should Your Horse Be Turned Out On Green Grass? Horse Talk Episode #5
Thank you for confirming the purpose of this site – to educate to the point where we can teach others! You made my day!
The gut microbiomes are very different between horses. Adjusting the food to develop the gut microbes that make each horse healthy is exactly what is needed. For some it is no adjustment and for others it is soaking…

Look for reservoirs of starch. Insulin appears when starch is ingested. The amount of starch in hay is often overlooked especially when it is added to the starch of the grass in the pasture. Limiting this through soaking the hay and limiting the intake will reduce insulin – just like living through winter.

Should Your Horse Be Turned Out On Green Grass? Horse Talk Episode #5
It seems complex @Sandy_K but it isn’t. For me to learn this I have replayed a lot of podcasts and books. This month’s webinar is my attempt to break down these mechanics into small parts to better understand the overall issue of glucose disposal, insulin, resistance, and EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome).
As far as the sugar content of grass,…

@Sandy_K Previcox is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which was shown by the Texas A&M vet school to eliminate a family of microbes that normally populate the mouth of horses – after only 1 dose. HOWEVER, this must be balanced against why it is needed to be used. Many horses have been on long term NSAID’s without a gut issue.…

I have been listening to a very interesting, 25 hour long book about the history of human nutritional research as I drive. The bad news take-away is that egos, the news media and poor technology all combined to deliver confusing, conflicting and ever changing information of what we were supposed to eat to remain healthy. Yet today heart…
