Horseshoes have been applied to the hooves of horses for centuries and maybe longer. They have a purpose-specific for a task. However, shoeing horses have evolved expanding into correcting problems hooves have developed. I want to find the cause and prevent problems before treatment is needed.

The way to strengthen hooves and therefore prevent hoof problems is to feed them the needed amino acids found in high-quality protein. You also need to reduce the amount of glucose fed in a day to be equal to or less than the daily need of the horse. These two things help horses resolve many hoof problems. I write about this a lot in the nutrition section and discuss this on my podcast.

If you need to apply horseshoes, find a farrier and a veterinarian knowledgeable in their use. Discuss the shape and material of the shoes and the angles being used when they are applied.

Above all, remember this one thing: NEVER TURN HORSES OUT TOGETHER WHEN ANY OF THEM ARE WEARING HIND SHOES. The result of this mistake is a horse with a broken leg.
