Horseshoes have been applied to horses’ hooves for centuries and may be longer. They have a purpose specific to a task. However, shoeing horses have evolved, expanding into correcting problems hooves have developed. I want to find the cause and prevent problems before treatment is needed.

The way to strengthen hooves and prevent hoof problems is to feed them the needed amino acids in high-quality protein. You also need to reduce the amount of glucose fed in a day to be equal to or less than the daily need of the horse. These two things help horses resolve many hoof problems. I write about this in the nutrition section and discuss this on my podcast.

If you need to apply horseshoes, find a farrier and a veterinarian knowledgeable in their use. Discuss the shape and material of the shoes and the angles being used when they are applied.

Above all, remember this one thing:

NEVER TURN HORSES OUT TOGETHER WHEN ANY OF THEM ARE WEARING HIND SHOES.

The result of this mistake is a horse with a broken leg.

The owner complained about the unusual stripes on the hoof but what was more noticeable was the offset shoes set wide to the hoof wall to compensate for the vertical wall on the inside of the RF and the outside of the LF. The idea here is to trick the hoof growth to draw its growth to the outside edge of the show where the hoof wall belongs.

Borium in titanium studs (2 types) ready to be installed on winter shoes to prevent slipping on ice. They also work on asphalt.
This “cheap” hammer is used only to drive Borium studs into shoes. The Borium is so hard that it divots and cups the surface of this steel hammer.

Every supplement has been used and every treatment for poor hooves including Clear Trax for white line disease has been tried. All hooves are affected equally. This was in 2013 before I recommended adding protein to reverse all of the conditions listed here.

Horse B – One horse with 2 completely different front hooves. The RF has vertical side walls, a dished in toe, elevated coronary band on the inside, and long and uneven heels.

The toe of this shoe is rolled and set back from the toe of the hoof to help in break-over and easing the tug of the deep digital flexor tendon on the navicular bone. The side clips helps to maintain the shoe in position and to support the side walls of the hoof.
