This is a chronic case of laminitis where the sole pad has thickened and hardened to protect the underlying coffin bone. The hoof wall has thinned and eroded and no longer offers support.

The typical posture of a horse with chronic laminitis. Notice the shifting of the weight backwards to load the hind limbs and that the hind-limbs are placed forward to carry the weight. The neck is commonly lowered I think because the horse is exhausted trying to hold the head up to shift the weight backwards. The BCS of this pony is good for a foundered pony too. He is allowed free movement about the farm and prefers the soft shavings where you see him standing in this picture.

This chronically foundered pony is kept light. The backbone has become raised as she has shifted her weight backwards off of her painful front limbs.

History of laminitis about 5 months ago with “laminitis rings” seen about ½ inch below the coronary band. The black hoof shows a “dished” appearance and the tubules of the white hoof is seen deviated at the ring.

Chronic laminitis in an older Thoroughbred gelding who was never fat (a hard keeper) and also had spontaneous nosebleeds and was neurotic. Most likely had severe colonic ulcers and was on grain to maintain his weight. He was euthanized after years of hoof work that never removed his pain or anxiety.
