Thank you both for your responses. I’m in for the longterm. I have already noticed his stomach muscles looking tighter.
I’m shocked that in all the time I’ve had horses I never new about the BCS or TLS. Between them I have an objective assessment of the amount of fat and muscle on my horses.
I hadn’t knowingly been feeding grain, just a…

Rudimentary canine 305 found in a 15 year old mare. She did not exhibit any gelding-like behavior. I believe this is because the tooth is too small. My mare has a rudiment canine the same size 405 and shows more mare-like behavior than gelding. The tooth wiggled to the touch and was easily extracted with my fingers. The views shown are… Read more

Nice find! What do you mean “gelding-like?” Can you describe this for us all?

Small rudimentary canine in a 19 year old mare. Tooth 305. In theory, canines in mares tends to alter the behavior to more of a gelding attitude. The owner did confirm that she exhibits gelding tendencies and was surprised that I knew that about her horse.

How to clean the teeth of a horse with EOTRH - especially an unwilling one
1) How to lift the upper lip in a horse that doesn’t want it lifted – Many horses don’t like their upper lip fiddled with. This could come from sensitivity, a past experience with a lip twitch or both. What I do is start with gently placing your thumb on the outside of the LOWER lip and pull that down to expose the lower incisors. If you are…

How to clean the teeth of a horse with EOTRH - especially an unwilling one
Horse Systems (Dental EOTRH)
Further to my initial EOTRH question, I’ve managed to track down this photo of my horse’s EOTRH from Dec20 which our tooth technician managed to take. I’d be grateful if I could add to the discussion advice as to how to clean trapped food. It would be helpful to learn the techniques for holding up the upper lip… Read more

Howdy @Caroline – Thanks for taking the nutrition course and then applying it to your crew. So after almost 50 years with horses I can whole heartedly agree with you – they teach you something every day. My job here is to pass this on to everyone. Thanks for joining us! Doc T

I ditto @Kathy – be patient. The muscle will take 6 to 12 months or more to return while the fat is quick to go. What is more important is the improved attitude soon followed by the improved overall health of the horse. Improved work ethic and improved resiliency and recovery after exercise are common observations along with improved hair…

My best advice is to be patient and trust the process. At two months in I think it’s the point that folks are most likely to bale because the fat is leaving and revealing the loss of muscle underneath, and the protein supplementation hasn’t been going on long enough to see the impact it will make on topline. It just takes longer to build…

Should my horse's teeth be extracted due to EOTRH?
This looks like an immune reaction with serum. Causes could include bites from an insect or a contact dermatitis or from a puncture from thorns. There could be a lot of other reasons. However you said these were only on the hind limbs. I assume your horse isn’t in a standing stall (slip stall) or is restricted so the hind limbs are exposed…

Hi Everyone,
Really enjoyed reading your intro’s, so in the spirit of the community here’s hello from me….
