The Horse’s Advocate Journal February 2021 Issue #2
hi Matt. I can’t seem to find Issue #2 but I would have sworn I’ve seen it somewhere! When I open the link it goes to Issue#3. Has the link for #2 changed? ta! 😄

Do horses like to eat SBM (soybean meal)?
Mine all eat it dry, by itself. They will also eat it wet.

I’ve paid more for non-gmo ($25.50 per bag) and one store was getting I think $35 for organic (I never bought it as neither the store nor the mill could tell me if it was Dehulled). The regular SBM is $18.50 at one store and $20 at another IIRC and the price is pretty steady.

9 year old Paint horse with Parrot Mouth missing #102 incisor. Owner informed me it was pulled because it was sticking straight out the mouth. Parrot mouth is when the mandibular incisors are caudal to the maxillary incisors. This condition does not affect the cheek teeth. Horses are able to chew properly and maintain healthy weights. Suitable Proteins Other Than SBM
Thank you Dr. Tucker! I believe in the phrase “less is more” as well. I can’t imagine adding multiple supplements (hoof, coat, colic care, fly repel, oils, etc) and additives (rice bran, seeds, wheat bran, etc) to a horse’s diet can be good for them, or wouldn’t cause some sort of GI upset or imbalance. Even before the No Grain diet I only…

Thanks @KayTeeDid – Store your SBM in steel or heavy plastic pails to prevent rodents getting in. You also don’t want it in humidity. SBM will spoil over time and should be thrown out (not fed) if it is close to a year old or is spoiled in any way.

I know some of you are having issues with getting clean SBM but has anyone noticed an increase in the price? Ever since I started buying SBM, about a year ago, the price had gone steadily up to $8 more than what I first paid per bag. Soybeans are grown pretty easily here in Virginia and I haven’t heard of anything that would increse…

There are agricultural engineering articles out there working on the technical engineering issues farmers have. I have read several articles on SBM and the unique issues with moving it. It is a “sticky” product that requires steeper angles for the augers (gravity assistance) plus the addition of “flow agents” to prevent clumping and jamming.…

Kathy, this is such a good question. I pull stuff out of my SBM regularly and even had two bags with grain bugs in it. They replaced it, but I had to clean everything 😬. I have started doing research on how to source quality SBM and it’s frustrating that there is nothing truly geared towards horses. What I have found for human grade does not…
