I’m not sure what the dimpling is, but his overall condition looks great in that second photo.

And just for fun (I loved the color genetics discussion), here are a few pics. The bay leg belongs to my horse, Remy, (TB) who doesn’t have saturated black points on his legs. He was the first of many bays I’ve had that didn’t have high black legs. He has what I call “crew socks”. His sire is dark brown and his dam was chestnut. The grulla…

Hey guys! There is a horse in my barn that has completed the no grain challenge and has been on the SBM (and hay) diet for 1 ½ years now. The past couple months his owner has noticed these dimples on his side and we have been trying to puzzle out if these are fat deposits or u related. He received ½-1lb of SBM per day (depending on work load)…

Here is an image of a pony from the barn where @Karen lives. This is a complex coat color and I would like you to take a guess as to the genetics behind it.
Karen – please hold off a week before replying what the actual color is. Everyone else, give us your best shot. If you are arriving after the answer is given, please don’t look first.

Feeding the Endurance horse during a race?
This is a question that can have several answers depending on a lot of factors. But the principles should be the same: 1) eliminate gut inflammation, replace the lost glycogen and 3) supply the needed daily amino acids. However, when any animal (horses or humans for example) are being used in an athletic capacity beyond the basic needs,…

Feeding the Endurance horse during a race?
One of my favorite things to do with my horses is to ride Endurance. I typically compete in 50 mile rides. We have 12 hours to complete and the horses usually have an hour to an hour and a half of mandatory hold time. My horses have all been on the no grain diet plus soy bean meal since September of 2020. They are all doing very well. I…

Meant to get a question in on behalf of a friend. She wondered what labs she might contact for testing. Wasn’t sure where to post in the forums related to tonight’s presentation. Thanks!

Big thanks to both of you for your thoughts! I hope as I learn more through the nutrition course my terminology will become more accurate for those reading. I agree that his muscle mass is looking good and I hope it continues to improve as I work him on the SBM and forage diet. I will include updates on the No Grain Challenge page as Doc…

Hi Micah! Welcome to THA!
My thoughts:
1) The term “weight loss” is an interesting one because it does not describe anything specific. For example, If I cut off my arm and threw it away I would have “weight loss.” I prefer to be more specific such as muscle loss or fat loss.
To interpret what you are saying here, despite 6 months of SBM he is…

Hi Micah, Welcome to The Horse’s Advocate.
To answer your question about the weight gain issue (you’ll definitely find it as you go through the nutrition course), Doc T recommends a product called Coolstance. It is made from shredded coconut, which is a noninflammatory fat for horses. He does not advocate beet pulp. I believe you can…

Hey everyone! My name is Micah and I am so excited to be joining this group. I learned about the nutrition course from a friend and I am now working on completing the course.
My horse Tiny (17.2 h thoroughbred) moved with me from Colorado to Florida in January and had a tough go of it with the climate change causing a fair amount weight-loss…
