7-Month Progress Report: Teddy
Teddy just turned three, and he is Meadow’s colt (she was in foal when we adopted her). We have wanted to be sure to keep him a “lean teenager” knowing his mother’s metabolic issues. I have included a picture of him today and I’m happy with his 3-year-old development on this diet. I shared his story previously, but he went from being our… Read more

Jane is built very wide and round like a Halflinger, but her fat loss over her ribs and rump and at her tail head can be clearly felt. Though her neck maintains a bit of a cresty shape, it has decreased. She has a defined hip where she didn’t before. She has no food anxiety whatsoever, is a very peaceful and laid back horse, and she is working… Read more

7-Month Progress Report: Whisper
Whisper achieved her target fat loss pretty rapidly on this diet and her training is going very well. She grows so much foot between trims, that we are shortening the cycle. She had a setback in early spring with a really stubborn hoof abscess that resulted in cutting out a lot of sole to get it to drain. She has grown it all back already… Read more

7-Month Progress Report Meadow
Prior to starting the challenge, Meadow had lumpy fat deposits over her ribs and rump and a rough coat with itchy skin. She had “bad feet” according to my farrier and has had intermittent soreness in her feet, and a toe-first landing, though her radiographs looked good. This month my farrier commented that Meadow’s feet are the best… Read more

Hi Doc I’m so bad navigating on any device so forgive me if this isn’t the right place to ask this but here goes…Can one see behavioral issues in horses that are being fed feeds with sugars in them? I swear I can. I was feeding some rescues for a friend who was giving them all, including a 10 month old filly, feeds with sugar. When they see…
1 Comment-
ABSOLUTELY!!! Any horse being fed excess glucose can have behaviorial issues. But more than that, the grains are usually mixed with hulls and byproducts that cause gut inflammation. This leads to discomfort in the gut.
On a side thought, have you wondered why there is so much road rage on the roads now? I would bet you that it is based… Read more

Rounds With Doc T - Ask Doc T Anything - 2022 May 16th
Howdy,
I’m still kind of curious about the different types of magnesium supplements and whether there’s any truth to Mg malate being more effective than Mg oxide. Asked for one of the previous ADA sessions but it required research. Feeding Mg (currently the Mg malate) and Vitamin E on my vet’s recommendation for possible PSSM2.
Out of… Read more

@Emily and @Doc-t, the collapsible feeder turned out to be in a backorder black hole so I canceled it. I may try again toward the fall. It isn’t my barn so I hesitate to buy or build anything else that has to be attached. I already shell out money for boards he chews or pulls down (my clue that he’s frustrated). Also, because of the way… Read more

Beet Pulp and it's Effects on the Horse
Thanks for this question. I need to clarify my thoughts.
Sugar beet pulp (SBP) is the byproduct of the sugar beet industry; the remains of sugar beet processing after removing the sugar (the 2nd leading source of sugar for humans behind sugar cane). This pulp is mostly fiber used as food for the hindgut bacteria (a prebiotic). Another… Read more

Beet Pulp and it's Effects on the Horse
Hi there! I have come across many horse owners feeding beet pulp to their senior horses as part of their feed regimen. I remember listening to one of your podcasts (I dont remember which) where you said beet pulp is the byproduct of the sugar beet and thus has no nutritional benefits. Then I read in this article on beet pulp stating: “Some… Read more

I just got to the end of my driving for the day as I started this AMA. I am in my car and the sun is going down. Please understand that as the sun darkens the exposure of the camera darkens too. I adjusted for this compromising the beginning (overexposed and very bright) to the end (underexposed and dark). Ah, life on the road.

Coprophagy! The eating of one’s own manure! One of the 5 smells people working in the mouth of horses know well! We come across this every once in a while and it is usually a surprise to the owner.
I have never known coprophagy to be a mineral deficiency. I have never seen any studies to support this. I believe, however, that it is a way… Read more

Weird thing today. This was the second time in a month that one of my teenage horses passed manure when I was hacking home and turned around and sniffed and ate some of it. 😳 He always wants to sniffs strange manure on trail rides but only sniffs. He usually poops at least once and often twice when I ride him and I’ve never seen him sniff his… Read more

@Emily I have seen this in Wellington FL but not used much on the farms I visit. The company contacted me a few years ago and their marketing director came to my house to show me the details. You can see the images of the example on this website in examples of hay but it looks just like what you posted here: … Read more
