On the nutrition test I missed the question on the benefit of sugar (I believe the answer was to make fat). Although that did not make sense to me it was emphasized in the next lesson. I am doing this from memory on the course I took several months ago. In any event I ran across the following and although for humans I thought it might be helpful.
Glycolysis is important because it is the metabolic pathway through which glucose generates cellular energy. Glucose is the most important source of energy for all living organisms. In the human body, glucose is the preferred fuel for the vast majority of cells: It is the only fuel red blood cells can use.

This is correct, as the brain uses 20 to 25% of the glucose humans consume. The problems come when mitochondria lose their ability to use glucose and fat for fuel. This is called mitochondrial inflexibility and is theorized to be the root cause of many cancers. Therefore, glucose is the most important energy source, but it also needs time off because it is an inefficient fuel compared to fat. All animals need flexibility between the two fuels to stay healthy.
I need to review this question to clarify. Thank you for asking about this. Doc T
