Hello, Everyone, I’m Andrea & new to the group. I’m the director and an instructor at From The Ground Up Therapeutic Horsemanship, located in Upstate New York. We have 13 horses, most of them in their 20’s but also 2 very special retirees, Lucky (Paint) age 37 and Tina Turner (Fjord) age 35, who both still do Groundwork lessons. We switched our herd to the no grain diet in February of this year….what a difference it has made behaviorally, physically, and energetically! We did switch our Lucky as well. He had been on a commercial Senior feed and from the time we walked in the door in the morning, he would repeatedly buck & kick the walls in his stall until he got his feed. He would repeat this behavior at dinner. I was afraid he would injure himself as he had an injury to his L hind a few years ago. So we took him off the Senior feed and replaced it with soybean meal in addition to his t/a hay mash (he & Tina have just a few teeth left). As Doc T says, the difference at feeding time was astounding. No more kicking & banging in the stalls, INCLUDING Lucky! As winter went on into spring, we saw the younger horses develop very shiny, silky coats & much more muscle. Their behavior improved not only at meal time but all the time. Then we noticed Lucky was losing weight rather quickly. I knew some horses lose the fat weight when they’re switched but he was losing too much. We tried increasing his forage & soybean meal but it wasn’t helping much. Then we heard about CoolStance. We tried it and it seemed he couldn’t get enough! I did write to Doc T and he advised me to increase his Cool Stance and soybean meal. The problem we have run into is getting CoolStance. We are getting it from SmartPak but have had some scheduling and shipping issues. I definitely don’t want to run out of it so I’m wondering if anyone knows of another supplier in the Northeast. Thanks for listening to my long story!!

Welcome Andrea! Thanks for this posting about your experience with your group. I’m not able to advise where to purchase Coolstance. I had heard that SmartPak had a subscription for delivering it which removed the shipping.
One thing to remember about fat loss is that this is also an indicator that there is 1) less total body inflammation and 2) the cells are going through a clean up process. The result is not just fat loss but also an improved overall joy of life. At 37 years old, horses are at a point metabolically where they just don’t put on any muscle. Other horses at this age have also reported fat loss exposing the underlying muscle loss. But even with added SBM and Coolstance, they never seem to add back the muscle. However they are running around the paddock like 2 year olds and appear much happier. They then pass away “healthy” and happy.
I am grateful you found this way of feeding your horses and have experienced the benefits. Now that you are here in the Horse’s Advocate, take advantage of the nutrition course, the forums and the rounds so that you can help others with their horses. It is a life long crusade for sure and I am glad to have your help. Doc T-
Thanks so much for your reply, Doc T! I appreciate the advice so much but I did almost cry when I read they “pass healthy & happy”. He is still happy & healthy & still has the beautiful gaits he’s always had & is still the patient, wonderful teacher he has always been. Thank you so much for what you are doing for horses and their humans!!
