@doc-t , I had two separate conversations about copra recently. One was with an equine nutritionist who has a similar no grain approach, however she uses copra in place of soybean meal and touted its amino acid profile. The other had been told Renew Gold was comparable to soybean meal, but I think she was confusing that product with straight copra. I created a test diet in FeedXL using the Coolstance and it balanced similarly to my diet with sbm. However, other info I found in a quick web search indicated copra is deficient in its amino acid profile. I’m curious, but confused.

I can’t seem to be able to reply to this so this is a test

That worked – maybe my comment has a link…
There is confusion created by Coolstance themselves. They often compare themselves to grains and say so in their official website here: Stanceknowledge dot com / amino-acid-composition-of-copra-meal (The actual link prevented me from posting). Notice they say they are an “energy source” and compare Coolstance to other energy sources (grains). Also notice the numbers on the vertical axis that offer no units. It is just a comparison guide with no actual numbers. Absent is a comparison to SBM in real numbers.I am always surprised when people suggest there is a better source of the essential amino acids for horses other than SBM. Why? I guess if you cannot get SBM in your area it would be good to find another source but I can’t think of another rational reason.
My biggest concern is the reason behind chronic protein deficiency which is the chronic intake of excess glucose in the form of starch. As long as this continues it won’t matter what protein sources you add or even how much. They will all be converted into glucose while the connective tissue, neurotransmitters, immune system, etc will suffer.
Renew Gold has Coolstance in it along with rice bran and flax. This is a great feed for underweight 30 year olds to help them survive the little time left alive. I think Coolstance alone is better for these older horses needing to add body fat. Several 30+ year olds with no body fat have gone grain free + several pounds of SBM + several pounds of Coolstance getting little added weight gain visually in muscle or body fat. However they all start to become alive running about the paddock like a young horse before laying down to die. I think THAT is a win!
I would like to see the analysis of the SBM v Coolstance you did. Please send the details. Thanks for your question but I would like you to also ask these people why they are opposed to SBM. I hope they don’t offer a “canned” response such as glyphosate or GMO. I would rather hear real results as in case reports. Thanks!-
The opposition I typically hear is the “canned” response you mentioned, plus the generalized “soy is inflammatory” comment. Doesn’t matter if I point out the meal is dehulled and the oil extracted. Re the copra protein, I’ll see if I can figure out how to make side by side comparison with copra and sbm.
