Re sweating: Is heavy sweating without exercise anything to watch? It’s Summer, it’s miserably hot and humid, and I would expect (and hope for) sweating, of course. Yesterday his neck, chest, and barrel were soaked. He has shade and a shelter. He gets hosed off almost daily, and he has free access to salt (not a block). He had one episode earlier in the spring on a hot day where he got kind of dull and wobbly. I gave him a paste electrolyte and that took care of it. No episodes since. I wondered if it is because he’s been on vacation while I’ve been out of commission and he is out of shape. But, even when he was pretty fit he still sweated a lot. Just curious. Maybe it’s just him. This photo makes him look chunkier than he really is, but he’s definitely well into the 6 category on the condition/weight scale at the moment. He’ll begin to drop some of it as the grass dies back and he goes back into regular exercise.

A horse can lose electrolytes through sweat. Therefore, adding oral electrolytes may be needed if you see “thumps” in an exercised horse in hot weather, and if it helps for being “dull and wobbly,” that’s OK too. However, if a horse is resting and the weather is hot and humid, adding fans (or a misting fan) plus adequate cool water should be enough. I think having excess sweat is never a problem in resting horses, only in working horses.
