Had a wake up call this afternoon. Now, intellectually I know prices have risen. I know this. But, I haven’t had to buy SBM since May when it was about $21/bag. Today it was $28.50/bag. That was a bit of a shock. My farrier hasn’t raised his price or added a trip charge, and the other supplies I use have stayed pretty stable so I guess I was lulled into complacency. What prices are you all seeing? I’m in the Atlanta area.

Kathy tells me that ours is now $22 – up from $20 per 50 pound bag or a 10% increase. But here is the thing about the cost of SBM with no other supplements. It is like using an electric car versus an ICE (internal combustion engine) car. When the price of electricity goes up, it’s still more cost effective.
Don’t get me wrong. I think increasing SBM 36% is a lot, is painful on the budget, and should be addressed. Maybe they made a mistake. But if they didn’t and won’t lower your price, the cost-benefit of adding a high quality protein versus the cost of illness or loss of use due to lameness is still a benefit.
I think we all want to know if SBM is going to rise. Remember, it is still a crop and costs rise not just in shipping but in seasonal issues too. By the way and for comparison, our SBM comes from Sandusky, Ohio and is shipped to south Florida.-
Hmm. Maybe I should buy my stash of sbm during my next visit home to central Ohio.
