Reply to "sugar fungus" is Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

      Lynne,

This one-cell organism is also known as brewer’s yeast or baker’s yeast. It is used in making beer, wine, and bread. As a probiotic, it is added to food (human and animal) to normalize the microbiome. “Saccharomyces” is derived from the Greek word for “sugar fungus.” It was first found on grape skins.

I do not consider adding any… Read more

      Description
Topic: Theoretical causes of Cushing's Disease / PPID
Description: The experts are now saying that Cushing's disease (PPID) is a neurodegenerative disease, but that is as far as they are willing to go. But we all see this disease in our horses older than 12 years, and they all look poorly. Why?

Many confuse this disease with Equine Metabolic Syndrome and Insulin Resistance / Dysregulation. I want to clarify the difference. I also want to discuss that there may be a way to normalize horses diagnosed with this disease and, with the help of your veterinarian, get horses off medication.

Reply to Use of DSMO for equines

This is a good one, especially since DMSO is one of the 3 medications I would want on a deserted island. Can you guess the other two?

This week’s Rounds has been scheduled, but maybe the next one.

Yes, I have a lot of info on this. I searched for “photosynthesis” and found 9 items that included some of the course units, podcasts, and rounds. Go to the spyglass in the upper right corner, type in a word or two, and then hit enter (important to hit enter). Have fun exploring!

Thanks, Lynne, for these thoughts. If only I had the time to go around the countryside to give clinics. However, the cost to bring this information is high and is met with my regular job of farm visits. Until I am free to have this site pay all the bills, I must continue to plug away with my approach.

Doc-t replied to the discussion manure odor in the forum Systems And Diseases 10 months ago

      Reply to manure odor

      Thanks for this question, Lynn.

The odor and consistency of manure is a reflection of the microbiome of the gut. In any species, a solid consistency, brown color, and non-offensive odor represents a healthy gut microbiome. Free fecal water (the “squirts”) is an example of an inflamed hand gut. A strong and offensive odor also reflects this.… Read more

Merry Christmas to all of the advocates for horses. Thank you for being here and sharing what you learn with others.

I’ve uploaded and indexed last Thursday’s Rounds With Doc T where we discussed PPID / Cushing’s disease. Good stuff there.

I’m finishing the videos for the Advanced Equine Nutrition course today and tomorrow. Note… Read more
