Help Please,
I have been diligently feeding no grains no sugars only good Timothy hay some alfalfa cubes for treat SBM mixed with Tim/Alf pellets and this has been going on since 11/20 I still have two girthy horses, bite at me every time I saddle, overall not happier I thought so at first but they have slipped back to being content to just be in their pens and eat, when taken out they eat every bush tree and blade of grass they can find to I took the flakes of hay up to two each feeding am/pm still insatiable… what is up are they never going to get full and be happy…yes teeth floated utd on shots and worming feet done every 5-6 weeks religiously…saddle are Orthoflex and Specialized Saddle. age 9 and 19 thoughts?

Hi Jilly,
Back in Sept ’20 I had a similar issue. My Lustiano was on restricted hay ration and attacked every haynet as if starving. I was advised that if I fed him ad lib hay that was below 10% water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) he would self regulate in 3 weeks max. After 8 weeks he looked like he was carrying twins and was aggressive when groomed. He was eating 18-20kgs of hay a day and still attacking new hay nets. I did Dr T’s nutrition course and stopped! Although my hay was under 10% WSC I think it is too high for him. I soaked it, supplemented some with clean barley straw gave him some Alfalfa and SBM. He was still having 2.5% of his body weight in forage but as low sugar as I can get it.
6-8 weeks later he was back to like being groomed and very gradually started to walk away from an unfinished haynet. He is still a ‘greedy’ horse but so much happier. As I wasn’t feeding supplements the only things I changed was to lower his sugar and up his protein.
I hope this helps.
