Blood glucose (BG) is highly variable due to the time of day, the time taken after a meal, stress, and other factors, such as how well they slept. Therefore, BG is not a good marker of metabolic health.
Here is what I copied from Equus Magazine to explain it further: “Glucose. This sugar is an energy source inside the horse’s cells. Serum… Read more

I have not considered giving lectures as my life is already filled with travel and work. The exception is/was when I was already in the area for floating. Since last September, when I sold my northern part of the practice, I only service all of FL, Long Island ( a land unto itself), and Louisiana. If someone wants me to talk at night in… Read more

Hi Linda; Zoom is a great program to have on your computer, tablet, or phone. It doesn’t take up too much space and it is “safe” to use because they constantly update it with security enhancements. The program can be used to attend any Zoom meeting.
Zoom became popular during COVID and surpassed Skype, Google, Facebook, and all other… Read more

1:57 – Wondering if you can tell me why it is common for a vet to prescribe Thyroid L (levothyroxine) in a metabolic horse? I understand Thyroid dysfunction to be a rare root cause of a metabolic problem in a horse.
Also what thyroid function tests would you recommend to determine if there is a Thyroid… Read more

@DinahC Thanks for the details and my apology for not correctly saying Baker’s Yeast.
I have a thought – could it be that SBM in South Africa (or the product you are getting in your area) is made differently than in other areas? There are a lot of horses eating SBM both alone or as part of a commercial feed and I’ve been using it since… Read more

Thanks for this interesting observation. I have not see any reaction to SBM like this. I also cannot get a reason for it, knowing what I know about SBM in horses.
It’s interesting to know that otherwise, she is doing well. It doesn’t appear allergic (itching, hives, etc.). So I really can’t advise you on this because there are so many… Read more

2:00 minutes: “My 15 yo WB mare had her dental appointment a few weeks back. I have used the same dentist since purchasing her at 18 months of age. Good question, Mayra – There are a lot of parts to getting good hooves in horses with less-than-perfect quality.
Cracks and chips may be part of this horse’s makeup, especially if there are no other hoof issues along with this, such as crushed heels (tubules), splayed walls, soft soles, sore feet, or laminitis. My horse at home had a… Read more

Thanks for this update, Linda!
