0:01:37 – Anhidrosis (non-sweating) –
I also talk about “end-of-life” horses and how we should approach 30+-year-olds with diet for anhidrosis.

0:04:21 – My thoughts about vaccinations and what to vaccinate for by giving simple guidelines based on a logical approach to biosecurity. I also advise on how to inject vaccines.

0:10:14 – “My horses sweat while in the pasture. They have access to the barn, so when they get too hot, they walk into the barn and stand under fans for a while.”

0:11:33 – “My horse has a high titer but has a life threatening reaction to it.”
This comment is about vaccinations, with more discussions on this subject.

0:14:29 – “Does the sugar increase in baled hay after a year?”

0:17:39 – A perspective on overcoming concerns about starting some horses on the no-grain diet.

0:22:05 – What amount of soybean meal (SBM) can or should horses eat daily?
I do the math to determine how much SBM to feed a horse according to their body weight. There is a lot of math, and I use the whiteboard for you to follow along. I thoroughly discuss how body fat forms. I do the complete math behind the effective protein from SBM and hay to help determine how much protein is OK to feed.

0:43:42 – A comment about feeding beta-hydroxybutyrate, a molecule that enhances brain function and is made in the horses’ hindgut from cellulose.

    0:56:13 – A question about the product “Gut-X.”

0:58:11 – A question about two dental images (inside a horse’s mouth) showing a “shear mouth” on one side.

1:03:04 – “If a commercial feed is 22% NSC (non-structural carbohydrate), 14% protein, and 7% fat (I’m assuming per pound), how much would a horse need in the feed if he got 10% protein in his hay per day?”

Question: I still have a few bales of last year’s timothy to use before using this year’s baled hay. Does the sugar/starch content of baled hay change after a year? Or, does it remain at whatever it was when it was baled? Thanks! Linda asking for Wren

    Hello everyone.

I am hoping that I will be able to log in to the meeting on Thursday evening. In case I can’t make it, I wanted to say this.

I’ll be at some friends preparing to my first CDE event in Metamora Michigan. l am only doing dressage and cones and not the marathon. My mare is fit as a fiddle. When I was at a clinic a week ago the clinician asked me if I had clipped her as her coat was so good and I said no. Then she asked what I am feeding her! Of course, I had to tell everyone all about SBM. I listened to the recording of the last meeting and wanted to tell you what I thought about SBM when I first heard about it. I heard you speak on the podcast adult-onset horsemanship. And I was just thrilled to learn about this high protein diet. I have had a total of 4 Fjords 2 of which are buried here. They have all had various stages of metabolic disorders. The 2 older ones had foundered at some time before I got them and now, I am trying to prevent these two from doing the same. Sera still has more to lose, but Glinda is doing super well. So, no I was not worried about making the change from a ration balancer which I have always fed to SBM! Thank you, Dr Tucker for steering me in the right direction. I am sure most of us know people who have lost a lot of weight with keto or paleo so why not do the same for our horses.

    And I love our book.

    Thank you.

I hope to see you on Thursday.

    Gunn

Thank you, Gunn; I will read this on the Rounds, and discuss how you overcame any worries or doubts, and your success with the diet. Doc T

Hi Gunn, The Metamora CDE…how exciting! I’ve read about it. CDE’s are my dream, and now that my Morgan, Wren, is healthy (Thank you, Dr. T.) I think it’s finally possible. Please give us a report on your experience at the event, and as Whips like to say…Keep the dirty side down! Linda

I bought a copy of True & Incredible Horse Stories and enjoyed it very much. How do I read the other books from the website? Thanks, Linda

    Hello everyone!

I’m hoping it’s not too late to post a few questions I’ve came up with this week. (I’ve attached photos and numbered them to match my ?’s)

    1. I was sent two horses for training (new horse owners, green horses). The owner of both horses really doesn’t know much at all about feeding horses (they were on low quality sweet feed with no forage) they’ve given me the liberty of feeding them what I please while they are in my care. I have seen the results of SBM in my own horses so of course, this is the diet I have chosen for these horses as well. My question is, being as skinny as they are should I be feeding more than your recommended 1lb per day? If so how much sbm should I increase to feeding daily? (I have added a quality source of forage to their diet as well now). A current boarder of mine insists “my sbm diet won’t work to put weight on these horses and they need to be on pro force fuel and a body building supplement”. I’m confident the sbm will provide these horses with what they need if I’m feeding the amount they need. (Photo #1 and # 2)

    2. “Gut X”. Can we “dissect” the ingredients in this supplement? I am continually seeing it highly recommended but, I’m seeing no real science behind it. Owners claiming it helps with things such as weight gain and laminitis? What do you think? (Photo # 3)

3.I saw these images on a dentistry page with no context. From an owner’s perspective “it appears like the teeth came in sideways”.

How would you explain what’s going on in this image to the horses owner? (Photo #4)

How would you address these teeth when floating? How much can you remove without over floating? I’ve also included a photo of the opposite side of the mouth which appears “normal”. (photo # 5)
Excited to tune in for the Rounds later, thank you!
