Sleep occurs in every animal that researchers have studied, including birds, fish, aquatic mammals, and insects. Between 50 and 60 years ago, research was published on sleep in horses. Nothing was mentioned when I attended veterinary school from 1980 to 1984, with the exception of horses falling down, sound asleep during World War One (1914 to 1918). The thought was that sleep deprivation was a factor, as horses were kept in a state of readiness during combat.

There are loads of articles available on the internet about sleep in horses, and they all say the same thing. Most are based on horse behaviorists. Joe Bertone, DVM (he was a year ahead of me at Cornell), has made advances in accumulating anecdotal evidence from him establishing himself as an expert in sleep issues in horses.

Tonight’s Rounds With Doc T is a review of sleep and its importance in life. Every animal, from humans to insects, will die when sleep-deprived. Horses are no different. Let’s examine why this is the case and why we all need to reassess our need for good sleep hygiene in horses.
