I just got to the end of my driving for the day as I started this AMA. I am in my car and the sun is going down. Please understand that as the sun darkens the exposure of the camera darkens too. I adjusted for this compromising the beginning (overexposed and very bright) to the end (underexposed and dark). Ah, life on the road.

We cover the following topics (and then some):

    • Does magnesium malate get absorbed better than other forms of Mg in horses?
    • What determines the shedding of the winter hair coat other than increasing daylight?
    • What is Cervical Vertebral Malformation in horses and is it genetic?
    • What should be done with a 31 yr old mare with a fecal egg count of 2000 epg?
    • Why is it bad to feed last summer’s grass throughout the year?
    • Why is a 3 yr old having bit trouble even though he was recently floated?

    I discuss:

    • My deworming protocol and some history behind deworming.
    • How excess glucose in the blood damages the lining of our blood vessels (atherosclerosis) and possibly is the base cause for laminitis.
    • How the cells generate energy.
    • How fat is a preferred fuel over glucose.
    • How baby teeth in young horses affect the use of a bit in training.

    And more!!

    Howdy,

I’m still kind of curious about the different types of magnesium supplements and whether there’s any truth to Mg malate being more effective than Mg oxide. Asked for one of the previous ADA sessions but it required research. Feeding Mg (currently the Mg malate) and Vitamin E on my vet’s recommendation for possible PSSM2.

Out of curiosity, what (other than length of days) might affect when a healthy horse fully sheds a winter coat? This year Remy shed out about 2 weeks earlier than he did previously.

Finally, again just out of curiosity, any thoughts on equine cervical vertebral malformation? Theoretically it’s genetic since they’re seeing it primarily in TBs and breeds with TB influence. Since it’s a relatively new area of research, I wondered how much air time it’s getting in the veterinary world. Discovered initially in Holstein cattle, if I understand correctly. Pretty disturbing regardless.

I’ll be on stall rest from knee replacement surgery happening later this week and might still be medicated to the gills so I might have to catch the replay.

    Thanks!

Thanks for these questions. I will be sure to get them on this month’s AMA and will (try to) remember to recorde it!!!!

I hope your surgery goes flawlessly and that you won’t be “shnockered” on AMA night! Best wishes from Doc T
