I just heard a fascinating discussion about pain (in humans) by someone who has made his life helping those who have difficulty controlling their pain. It went to places I had never thought of. However, I realized that it is part of what I use daily as I float teeth in worried horses with oral pain.

We covered the FEI announcement about bits signaling to the horse through pain and why their approach using “evidence-based science” may be causing errors.

Also covered was the 4 different types of pain:

    1. Nociceptive pain
    2. Visceral pain
    3. Neuropathic pain
    4. Nociplastic pain

I applied this to horses and then added how these types of pain and their perception of it drive behavior and our ability to connect with horses. I use this every day with horses, but what I learned in developing this discussion may bring another approach, helping you understand how to connect with your horses.

In my experience, pain tells me something is wrong with my horse. The big question is…what is wrong? Figuring out the cause, or in many cases, the causes, can be very difficult, somethings many things cause you to explore many different ideas. It can be a very long journey.

I wrote an article for Morgan Horse Magazine about pain often being misdiagnosed as a behavior issue.

This should be a very interesting discussion.
