“Aging Horses Using Their Teeth” May 8th, 2025 [[Replay]] ( Moved to community.thehorsesadvocate.com )
- 0:01:04 – I cover the difference between laminitis and founder and the rotation of the coffin bone.
- 0:06:05 – I am often asked to age a horse using their teeth because I see so many horses’ teeth. It makes sense. Not all horses have papers, lip tattoos, or computer chips embedded under the skin. Can the teeth give an accurate age, like counting the rings of a cut tree? I’ll discuss this, but I’ll also give you a hint. If the papers match the horse, then the papers are the next best thing to see, as well as a photo of the horse at birth with the front page of a newspaper included. Even that can be “Photoshopped.”
- 0:49:20 – What is “quidding,” why do some horses spill their food, and how can that be stopped?
- 1:03:39 – does the swallowing reflex become affected in horses with age as it sometimes does in humans?
- 1:06:07 – We get an update on Sara, the 34-year-old who has gone through another harsh winter but is coming into spring with a great attitude, improved haircoat, and a zest for returning to work.
