I just listened to the podcast Pituitary Dysfunction (What is Cushing’s Disease in Horses? Towards the end you mentioned how you have changed your own diet, increased protein, etc. You said you would right a blog on it sometime. I looked through the site but couldn’t find anything related to this. Does it exist yet? I am also making changes to my own diet and was curious what you have done.

The podcast on Cushing’s was made last March. Many things have happened and I don’t want to make excuses. But life often throws curve balls that distract us from our plans. Some things just “happen” but the premise is still the same – decrease or eliminate carbs, increase high quality protein, eat only good fats (monounsaturated). Also increase strength training to increase muscle mass for glucose disposal.

Last year I weighed over 230 pounds in January. By last August I was down to 210 and felt really good. I concluded that this diet and exercise was working. But in September I stopped exercise as well as coffee. I have no good and tangible reason why (that I want to say here). I did not start eating junk food because those habits had been forever changed. Sugar (no fruit and no processed foods) remained at a very low number but I started to consume more fat (olive oil – a long story). Then there were the Christmas cookies. I am back to 218.

I want to get back to the X3 resistance bands. I eat protein – collagen in my coffee (yes I’m back to drinking bulletproof coffee), lots of meat and eggs, some fish and a branch chain amino acid supplement in water. My goal is 200g of protein per day which is very hard to do. But I am feeling satiated. I eat one main meal at night and when working all day on farms I have a (real) sourdough bread sandwich with butter, cheese and meat.

I have energy to work all day. I don’t take a nap (night time sleep is the #1 important step in my body change). The horse are almost always easy to work on as my energy remains calm and non-threatening. I still get mad at selfish drivers on the interstate.🤠

I am not interested in making this transformation a race. I understand that life changes things. For me it is a constant and never-ending process of changing myself to become what I want to be. When I get there will be sometime soon, but not tomorrow. Because I am aware of what to do and why, I can now understand that improving the body condition in older people requires patience and consistency. Check back in a year and we will compare our notes. Thanks for your reply. This sounds pretty similar to the changes I’m trying to make but I must confess that I struggle with the discipline to stick with the diet and exercise plan. I’ve set some lofty goals for me and my mare this year with training and showing so my fitness is going to an essential part of my goals. I’ll have to look up bulletproof coffee. Thanks again!
