What I really want is a simple list of ingredients…
I received this request from someone: “What I really want right now is a simple list of the actual foods I should use in what amounts, without any explanations.”
Here is my response:
I really am trying to make this website easy for everyone to find the information they are looking for while providing the in depth reasons behind this information. My belief is that once the cause is understood, the implementation becomes easier to understand as well as to continue to do without being swayed back to former habits drilled into us by master marketing. So here are the concepts broken down into 1 sentence order followed by the “ingredients” list.
1) Stop gut inflammation by eliminating all grain and grain byproducts.
2) Reduce the intake of glucose (starch) in overweight horses to reduce the production of insulin which will allow for the consumption of body fat.
3) Add a high quality protein source to replace the lost protein from a high sugar diet and the lack of high quality protein in the pasture and hay.
4) Write a journal dating the progress.
The ingredients:
Pasture as needed.
Hay as needed (grass plus some legume if desired).
Soybean meal as the high quality protein source – 1 pound per 1200 pounds body weight (.45kg per 500kg). This is an easy figure to adapt to the actual weight of the horse as 1200 is easily divisible: ¼ pound soybean meal per 300 pounds body weight.
This is a great way to start to reclaim the health of your horses. It can be adjusted for use, age and response. Remember to journal and then add a summary to the “No-Grain Challenge” forum so everyone who is trying to do what you are doing can learn from your experience. Student becomes teacher!
