0:01:39 – Connecting With Horses – I am spending this week with Melissa and two students learning Horsemanship Dentistry. In this segment, I discuss how we connect with a horse within 30 seconds, not 30 minutes or 30 days. I’ll grant that these are not “wild” horses, but what we do is a bit out of their comfort zone. This is all about connecting with horses in a very basic way. My goal is to make a course here on THA about this.
0:20:50 – How to help a horse that suddenly went blind and lives in an environment where the owner doesn’t have control over how this horse is managed.
0:29:30 – How diabetes in a human can be affected by stress and cortisol. I try to relate this to horses who are insulin resistant and unresponsive to diet changes.
0:34:40 – “I’ve been soaking both of my horse’s hay for two weeks. Immediately, their manure changed in color. It is now a very dark, almost black. Does it mean something? Should I be concerned? I’ll make sure to listen to the podcast. Thanks!”
0:38:02 – 14yr OTTB has a stifle that has “given out.” This horse has been given Noltrex® for joint pain (“a synthetic 4% polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAAG), used in horses, to provide improved joint lubrication.”).
0:42:36 – Thoughts on anhidrosis (non-sweating), specifically minerals (magnesium, calcium) and their effect on sweating. I also discuss the chelation of minerals.
0:50:18 – “How do I feed my endurance horse during a 50 or 100 mile ride to best help them to maintain energy through out the ride with out causing any problems. Is it okay to offer them things like whole oats, soaked beat pulp with salt in addition to soaked forage.”
0:57:18 – “Any age limit for muscle training?”
0:59:15 – “We are learning a lot about Vit E and currently it is believed to be an over-consumption in certain breeds (Morgans) requiring supplementation. This doesn’t fit your horse.” This leads me into a bit of a rant on scientific studies in general and specifically in horses.
