Happy New Year, Advocates!
Tonight’s Rounds With Doc T comes from my new studio. Thanks to my son, Matt, and my wife, Kathy, for making this possible.
6:45 – How to add weight to a thin horse – This question is asked in our forums about a 13-year-old horse with two homes far apart. He travels between them twice yearly, losing a little “weight” from traveling but quickly regaining it. This year, he has not regained the weight after traveling. I discuss the possibilities broadly, adding to my response in the forum.
29:45 – EOTRH and slow feeding – This is another question asked in the forums about a horse with moderate EOTRH affecting the incisor teeth. The horse sometimes has difficulty swallowing the hay, evidenced by him going through a “re-chewing” motion. Because of this, there is a concern about choking (a horse that cannot get food down the esophagus and not to be confused with blockage of the windpipe). Prevention of choking in horses can be accomplished by slowing down the intake of hay using a “slow feeder.” However, these devices require horses to use their incisors to grab the food, which may be painful to horses with EOTRH.
48:40 – Hoary alyssum is a weed found in hay made in Michigan, coming to horse farms in South Florida. This weed causes fever, leg swelling, and laminitis in horses. The image in the video is posted here with more information about this weed.
