Having an IR horse is challenging, don’t let anyone kid you. Sticking to the program is a must. My Lipizzaner was diagnosed with IR last winter. It’s not a fun time to soak hay in Michigan. Regarding all the products out there to treat IR and the “low starch grains” I have found testing any hay I purchase, slow feeding it,SBM, exercise and careful turnout with a grazing muzzle at times to be effective. Oh, and Doc T’s advice! I’ve been super careful about inflammatories also.

I can say I have a different horse now behaviorally and physically! Insulin levels are normal. My horse is happy! Stick with it as change takes time.

    Thank you Doc!!!

This report is great news! Thank you for sharing. Would you add how long he has been on the new diet program? I am guessing one year.

I understand that it takes determination to stick to it through a hard winter. However, the reward is a healthy horse. What does your vet think?

Of course, now you are obligated to tell others . . . LOL. Let the fun begin!

My vet was not in support of me feeding SBM and assumed I was feeding a ration balancer. Very surprised when I told her it was SBM . She wanted me to give Metformin which was horrible and he hated. I stopped that as it was a waste of money as well as the InsulinWise product. I understand she was basing her tx on what she knew but now she knows something different, which can help other equines. My horse is truly a different animal!!!

Yes it has taken a year of hard work and I will need to stay vigilant in his care.

Thanks so much for educating me!! 🤠

Send your vet to any of my materials on Cushing’s and the use of SBM. I have plenty written and on my podcast (The Horse’s Advocate Podcast).

Next month’s Rounds with Doc T (November 28th, 2022) is on Cushing’s disease in horses.

I know your pain working with a vet that is not in tune. If you can share I would be interested in the insulin numbers at the start and currently.
