It was great to have everyone join us that could make it to the live meeting of “The Ins And Outs Of Fat.”

The movement of fat in the form of Free Fatty Acids (FFA’s) and triglycerides (TAG’s) throughout the body passes in and out of the body fat cell freely in a normal and healthy horse. I describe this arrangement and how a continuous supply of glucose in the food triggers insulin and the effect this hormone has in blocking the free flow of fat. This leads to obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Looking forward to reading the feedback on this topic and @doc-t will be happy to answer any further questions below!

Still figuring out where to post what, but… good topic tonight. Brain was already a bit overwhelmed from listening to the calcium to phosphorous podcast earlier in the afternoon. Husband walked through. Told him I was “in class”. I confess to eating a brownie bite while listening. I think he looked at me askance (but he bought the brownie bites so, his fault.) Now all I can think about are clogged cells.

Don’t worry you are in the right place 😀 But if things are still confusing let us know what we can improve. We do have limitation on what the software is able to do but we are always working on making some improvements in the background.

This topic was a deep one and I think it will be a good one for continued discussion, glad you enjoyed it!

I’m sorry I couldn’t join the live webinar but I have thoroughly enjoyed listening and learning from the recording.
I am a keen soaker of hay but what do you think of feeding oat or barley straw to horses? The horses will always eat their hay in preference but it can be mixed with some of the hay ration to reduce the over all starch content.

This might be a fantastic idea. The starch content of oat straw is lower and the lignin content higher. Therefore the horses won’t like it as much. In addition, the manure becomes more yellow than brown. When I exercised polo ponies back in the 70’s in Calif that is all they fed the horses.

Here are 2 images. The 1st is for oat straw (4% protein) and the 2nd is for grass hay at 10% protein.
