Tonight we discussed soybean meal answering several questions (how much can I increase per day, should SBM be fed only to older horses, is there a concern with GMO or is it affecting hormones, other sources of protein, and a few more) and protein in general (a brief review of the cause of protein deficiency, mitochondrial flexibility).

Also discussed were time-restricted feeding / intermittent fasting and the effect of restricting hay feeding on cell health and clean-up (hormesis).

Finally, we looked at whether a mineral imbalance could be an underlying cause for leaky gut.

If you have follow-up questions post them below and we can discuss or bring them to the next zoom meeting. These have been really enjoyable!

Please remember that this was recorded while on the road in a hotel on my iPad so the quality may be reduced. Ah, life on the road. ~Doc T

Katherine Williams – is Cushing something that is prone to particular breeds. Thick crested horses. Parts of the country. Feedings throughout a horse’s lifespan?

Carol S. Brewer – I would be interested in an extensive discussion of hay. Here in SC, they have “ coastal” hay which many refuse to feed fearing colic. My barn owner feeds it with a beet pulp mash and has never had a colic. But that is obviously an issue on this diet.

So now I am buying very expensive northern hay and having to make choices between Timothy from out west, up north, and various mixes of orchard grass, Timothy, and alfalfa, and or clover.

I think I now have a good source of mostly Timothy but don’t understand the differences nutritionally.

Also when hay is “tested”, what is it tested for and what do we want to see on Doc’s diet?

I will be devoting a full Rounds With Doc T to Cushing’s Disease and to a discussion about hay. Both have been scheduled for 2022 but I think I might move them up in order because of your interest. Stay tuned!

    Hey Matt,

I can’t listen in tonight but here’s a question a friend of mine would like answered, if Dr Tucker can address:

Has his suggestion for using sbm changed from feeding 1 lb to 2 lbs, and if so, what’s the basis? Couldn’t find anything on the site. Neither of her horses are in work.

    Cheers, and thanks!

@KarenM I answered this in the AMA tonight. I will try to get it uploaded ASAP but it also may be delayed until the end of this month. I’ll work on it.

Hi @Matt-Support I’m trying to find the replay for the February AMA. The link which I am replying to here (which came through with the email notification for the next Rounds) doesn’t seem to work. Also I think the January AMA was named as the February AMA by mistake. I have listened to the January AMA but would like to listen to that again but now I can’t find that either, sorry. Are the replays all in one place? Many thanks 😁

Jan and Feb AMA videos are now correct! Thanks for your patience! Go to the forum “Zoom Events” and look for the discussion with the AMA title.
