It is a fine “Merry Christmas” morning here in south Florida and I’m sitting outside in the cool morning air with a hot cup of Bulletproof coffee listening to the morning sounds of nature. Birds and ducks waking and chirping or honking, a dog or two barking at something, a horse snorting, a donkey crying and the occasional car tire on a lonely road.

Christmas morning has always been unique and special for me as a horseman and veterinarian. It is the calmest and quietest of all days of the year.

I remember in 1973 my 1st Christmas working with horses. It had snowed the night before. At dawn I was walking 2 brood mares up a hill to their paddock. The silence was so clear as was the sub freezing air. No wind and the crunch of snow under the hooves and my boots still echo in my mind today.

With the horses turned loose, I paused and really listened to the quiet.

Then, far away but yet so clearly, I heard the church bells toll thier message for all to hear throughout the land. The birth of Christ is celebrated this day!

While the Christian message may not be part of your life, what is true to all of us is this moment of connection we sometimes get when around our horses. These moments are so special and often personal, remembered but often not shared.

My Christmas message to all of you is my moment with horses. It still moves me almost 50 years later.

I invite all, at any time of the year, to share a moment here. But most of all, we (Kathy, Matt and I) wish y’all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!
