Hey everyone — I just started introducing soybean meal to my horse a few weeks ago. He is currently being fed beet pulp but I am needing a little time to transition him over for logistics reasons. Anyway, he was getting his hooves trimmed today, and the trimmer commented on how amazed she was that he seemed to have laid down such good hoof in just the few weeks since his last trim. My first thought was, “maybe the SBM has started having a positive effect.” Anyway, just wanted to share. Will post updates once we are completely transitioned.

@JulianneR I often ask horse owners to not tell their farriers / trimmers of the diet change and then wait for them to volunteer unbiased comments like this.

It usually takes about 2 to 4 months to “suddenly” see the new hoof wall growth from the coronary band (more vertical hoof walls). However, the sole is a different story. It is maybe ½ inch (12mm) thick and will rapidly respond to the addition of high quality protein in the diet. Kudos to your trimmer for noticing!

I didn’t mention the diet change, so it was definitely her own observation. And in the hoof and sole department, heaven knows we can use all the help we can get 🙂
