Horse no longer wants to eat soybean meal
I am new to the group and started the No Grain Challenge on May 12th. I actually wasn’t feeding grain, but I was feeding a variety of inflammatory things (beet pulp, camelina oil, supplements with junk in them, etc.) On May 12th I switched my horse over to 3-4 flakes of alfalfa, 2 lbs. of SBM, 2-3 qts. of alfalfa pellets, and Highpoint vitamin/mineral supplement by HorseTech (no inflammatory fillers, etc.) This is the total amount he gets daily, split into 2 servings. He also gets turned out in a small pasture with a combination of grass and weeds for 3-6 hours/day.
Initially my horse loved the SBM—but just over the last week or so, he has become much less of a fan. He basically picks out the alfalfa pellets as best he can and leaves the SBM. Does this mean that his body is telling him that he has enough protein? Should I be worried about this? Should I do something different? He loves the alfalfa hay he gets, and will choose that over SBM any day. FYI, he is at a good weight, recovering well from his severely sprained hock in January, and looks really good overall.
