Hello from Virginia!
Hey everyone! My name is Kaylee. I have a 29 year old mustang gelding, who I believe is a reservation mustang(he doesn’t have the BLM freeze brand), and a BLM Sulphur Springs mustang mare who is 5 years old.
Last year my gelding was really struggling to hold his weight. I tried feeds, supplements, different hays and read everything I could find about nutrition, weight loss and feeding senior horses. I finally stumbled upon Doc T’s article “Why Horses Should Not Be Fed Grain”. For the first time in my life I read something that actually made sense. I was so absorbed in Doc T’s articles that I read very late several nights and then made the decision to take the No Grain Challenge and remove all grains and byproducts from my gelding’s diet. It was a life changer for him, he was able to hold weight on adaquate forage and once I added soybean meal he had much more energy, his mane and tail started growing, his hooves became even stronger, and his coat quality and topline improved. I had previously thought he was as clam as he’d ever be but nope! After taking him off grains and byproducts he became even calmer! It’s been a year now that we’ve been feeding this way and he’s still living life to the fullest!
Eight months ago I purchased a “partially gentled” mustang mare. We’ve come a long way in the past eight months and I am just starting her under saddle. She is the youngest horse I have ever owned and a very blank slate. I am excited to be feeding her the way horses were designed to eat and am hoping to learn much more about the dental side of things so I can get her started on the right hoof!
I am forever grateful to Doc T for sharing his knowledge, if it weren’t for him my horses would not be where they are today!
