EOTRH and Slow-feeding
Hello all and Doc T,
My thoroughbred gelding, Beau, has moderate/near severe EOTRH (as described by Doc T during his float). When eating, I have noticed that he will occasionally take a mouthful of hay that appears to be too much for him to chew, bring it to the front of his mouth using his tongue, and then attempt to re-chew it. This does not happen often, and I am glad he does not just swallow before it is fully chewed, but I am nevertheless a bit concerned about choke. While I think a slow-feeder might help prevent these large mouthfuls, I worry it might be too difficult for him to either grasp the hay with his incisors, cause pain to the incisors, or wear down or further compromise the incisors. For these reasons, I want to avoid any slow-feeders with plastic or metal grating.
Doc T, what are your thoughts on slow-feed nets/bags for the EOTRH horse? Can it potentially create more problems/pain with the incisors or is it mechanically too difficult for them? Would a large hole size solve these potential problems?
