Is there any association with coughing and clover consumption? The Bermuda grass pasture is coming on but there’s a fair amount of white clover out there. Remy hasn’t exhibited any drooling (one of his pasturemates has) but he has developed an intermittent cough the last 2-3 weeks, enough so that I wondered if the cough could be related to the clover. This isn’t something he did before moving to this farm. It isn’t exercise related. He isn’t confined so it’s not inadequate ventilation. He doesn’t consume a lot of hay and even though what he does get is the last bit from last season, it’s pretty clean. Will be wetting it to see if that helps but I keep coming back to the clover. Google Scholar wasn’t helpful.

There are 2 things here. 1) coughing and 2) clover drool.

The cough can be coming from an unlimited number of things. I see pollen dust on my parked car and this is the time of year where everyone’s allergies are starting up. The 2 to 3 week window is along this line of reasoning. It certainly can be the grass but it can also be weeds, trees, and molds all arriving in warmer weather. It is common to have these occur after moving to a new environment even if the move was local. This could be from a new allergen in the environment or it could be from the stress of moving and a new herd hierarchy.

You will just need to be patient for the allergens to go away. You are doing everything on the nutritional end as far as keeping the rest of the inflammation down. Come bace in a week or so and tell us how she is doing.

The “clover drools” is usually later in summer (August) – see the topic of this in toxins.
