The Horse’s Advocate Forums No Grain Challenge Can’t find SBM in Northern California

I’m unable to find soybean meal from any of my local feed stores in California and can’t find a close substitute. Any suggestions of an alternative that is a close approximation? I’m currently supplementing with Equinety and my horses have pasture access, orchard grass hay, alfalfa hay and alfalfa pellets 1.5C /day), white salt block and loose Redmond salt. Any thoughts?

I have heard from others on the FB group asking the same thing. Then I hear from someone in Kenya who had no trouble finding SBM. It seems to be hit or miss.

Some travel an hour once or twice a month to get theirs. We are lucky as our local feed dealer is about 2 miles from us and delivers it. And they get it from Ohio.

CA is a large agricultural state. If there is beef, swine and poultry then there is SBM. You may need to look further than where you have been looking. But if you do find it and need to get several bags at a time then find some metal garbage cans and store it in them. The rats and mice will chew through bags. It also needs to be kept away from moisture. Heat and cold should be OK but probably not kept in direct sun outside.

SBM is fresh. None is kept over a year so what you purchase is made within the year.

Equinity reached out to me (they are in Tampa) and sent me samples. My complaint with ALL supplements is that there is no guarantee or oversight for assuring that what is stated on the label is exactly what is in the container nor the quality of the amino acid nor where it was made or for how long it was stored for. Soybeans are a crop with a lot of analysis and statistics applied over decades. This said, a protein supplement is better than nothing. But keep looking for SBM in the meantime. It is worth it – less expensive, safe and effective.

Also feeding only forage to your horses is helping to eliminate inflammation as well as slowing down the loss of body protein through gluconeogenesis. The Equinity is helping to replace the lost amino acids. You are on the right path to helping your horses! Thank you! Doc T
