Hi Doc I’m so bad navigating on any device so forgive me if this isn’t the right place to ask this but here goes…Can one see behavioral issues in horses that are being fed feeds with sugars in them? I swear I can. I was feeding some rescues for a friend who was giving them all, including a 10 month old filly, feeds with sugar. When they see you coming they go nuts like crack heads. They slam themselves into the stall door, kick, bite and tussle with one another trying to make sure they get theirs and it turns into a frenzy that’s become too dangerous for us to continue helping. I’ve never seen our sugar free horses behave so badly at pellet feeding time and am beginning to think that they can get addicted to it the same way we do. Thoughts?

      • ABSOLUTELY!!!  Any horse being fed excess glucose can have behaviorial issues. But more than that, the grains are usually mixed with hulls and byproducts that cause gut inflammation. This leads to discomfort in the gut.

On a side thought, have you wondered why there is so much road rage on the roads now? I would bet you that it is based on nutritional causes. Another thought – food anxiety (bad behavior at feeding time) is related to horses not being satiated or looking for a missing ingredient (like protein).

This might be a good “AMA” question this month!! Thanks, Doc T (also this is a fine place to place anything)
