Overview
Husbandry topics are items that help the horse owner manage the horses in their care. There are a lot more topics to add, but these will get you started with the basics.
Tip
These photos have captions to express any thoughts I have on the picture. The idea here is for YOU to get ideas, so grab a cup of coffee, darken the room, grab a pen and paper to write notes, and sit back and enjoy. I have more shots and I’ll add them later as I have time.

Did you know that fast food restaurants don’t make us fat? It’s true! What makes us fat is driving to and from the fast food restaurant!

Overfeeding our horses and not exercising them is not allowing them to become the athletes we envision them to be. This video discusses the importance of exercising your horse.

All animals store fat to have energy ready for when they need it. However, in a domesticated animal that is now used primarily for recreation, the need for stored energy is never realized. This not only includes bursts of running for their lives, but keeping themselves warm in the winter.

Feed for fuel, not for emotion is a good rule to follow for intake, but try to remember that it is equally important to offer some sort of exercise for the consumption of calories. However, this can often be harder with a lame horse, a geriatric horse, an owner working 2 jobs and no daylight, or a farm with 100 brood mares.

My point is this. If you are raising an athlete then a regular exercise program is an important part of that. If you are keeping the horse as a recreational vehicle, don’t pretend he is an athlete and make him lame. If you are keeping a pet, don’t feed him like he’s an athlete.
